Q&A with Suzi Q

When it's time to quit, says Suzi Quatro , she'll know. But right now, the pint-sized legend rocks on.

Suzi Quatro as a grandmother is a bit of a mind shift for those of us who remember her as the pint-sized girl with the big guitar. Born in Detroit in1950, she turned 57 in June this year. But she's a long way off transitioning into retirement, and she looks a decade or two younger than her years, a fact which amuses her greatly.

She laughs about the fact she has always looked younger than she is. When she was aged 34 she was refused alcohol in Texas because she still didn't look old enough to drink. Married since 1993 to her second husband, Rainer, Suzi kicks butt combining family, music and a punishing touring schedule. Your Life magazine caught up with her as her autobiography, Unzipped , was hitting the shelves.

Did you find it easy to write?
Yes, I write as I speak, in a stream of consciousness.

Are you still the little girl with the big guitar?
Yeah, I still have the emotional age of six.

Is that a problem for you?
No, but it is for other people. They need to take me or leave me. I've always maintained the child in me – maintaining my inner child keeps me sweet, keeps me fresh.

How do you keep in shape?
By liking my shape. Over the years I've been careful but not fanatical. I jog and I do yoga. And my stage work certainly keeps me fit. I still do 70 to 80 shows a year – and when I come off, I feel like superwoman.

How do you keep your voice in shape?
I've learnt to use it properly – my voice is very strong and when I'm on the road I live like a nun – I sleep 10 hours if I can – no after parties.

Are you scared to give up?
No, I'm not scared, my time hasn't come yet. When it does, I will know it. When the thought of performing becomes alien, that's when I'll quit. I have never thought: “I shouldn't still be doing this.”

Regrets?
I'm not a big one for regrets – what goes wrong is supposed to go wrong. It's your destiny, so you can learn the lesson and move on. If you don't, the same lesson will keep presenting itself until you do learn. Only then can you move on.

What is your greatest achievement?
Being successful, but maintaining my normality.

How do you describe normality?
Buying the groceries.

What makes you smile?
My granddaughter, Amy, who is six. She's fun and very well behaved – a credit to my daughter. After this interview we're going to play on the internet and are then off to the pool.

Which current male singer would you choose for a duet?
Robbie Williams – he has panache, and crosses the borders with his repertoire.

How do you keep the zing in long-term relationships?
By having the good debates that you need to have. By never thinking you have to agree for the sake of it. By sticking to who you are, maintaining your respect for yourself and your other half. Admiring and applauding your differences – we can teach each other things, and draw in the opposite.

In three years you'll be presented with a senior's card – what will you say?
I'll take it – why not?

The problem is, after her Texan experience, Suzi probably won't look old enough to deserve the discounts. YL
