Ballet flats that aren’t boring

A cult classic, no wardrobe is complete without at least one pair of ballet flats. However, these unsung fashion heroes often get bad press, falling into the category of being considered boring.

A heels girl myself, I have been guilty on many occasions of writing off ballet flats as nothing more than practical, making them, naturally, unexciting. But lately I have been forced to eat my words. Perhaps in my old(er) age, they seem more enticing than the back-breaking high-heeled alternative? Or maybe the abundance of sexier styles now available is to thank for their increased appeal?

Either way, here are three styles of this wardrobe staple that are anything but boring. Perfect for trans-seasonal dressing, invest in one (or all three) to help you comfortably walk your way out of winter, and into the warmer weather.

1. Loafers

The smartest option of the bunch, a pair of good loafers will work hard for your money, literally. Perfect for work or eveningwear, they can also be dressed down with jeans for the weekend. If possible, pair with pants that let a little ankle show for a sexier look. As the weather heats up they make a great match for a pretty sundress too.

2. Espadrilles

A more casual option, Espadrilles are not only comfortable but they have the added benefit of looking cool. The ideal companion for a pair of jeans, they also work well with full skirts and summer dresses. And with their rope sole, they practically scream nautical so wear with on trend white pants and a navy stripped t-shirt.

3. Lace-ups

Lace-up shoes of all varieties are having a major fashion moment – and for good reason. If these statement shoes don’t say sexy, I don’t know what does. Possibly the best flat shoe option for a dinner date or evening out, they can also be worn with jeans for a smart casual look. For a more versatile version opt for a sandal style to take you all the way through summer.

Our top picks:

1. Tony Bianco, Olley Loafers, $80

2. Sportsgirl, Carmen Leather Slip On Espradrille, $59.95

3. Topshop, Finest Ghillie Lace-Up Flats, Approx. $60
