Earning money on the road
It’s all well and good taking off on the open road but how do you fill in your time or make a bit of extra cash while you’re travelling? There are plenty of opportunities for those willing to give things a go, you just need to know where to look.
What work is available?
Casual job opportunities that may suit travellers include:
House-sitting – Travellers can break their journey without paying for accommodation when they house sit. For details of housesitting opportunities visit:
Happy House sitters
Aussie House sitters
Caretaking/station work - Casual positions are available at cattle stations caravan parks and farms at various times. Investigate tourist information, newspapers and community notice boards to find ‘help wanted’ advertisements. For links to pastoral company websites that may include job opportunities, visit Fiona lake.
Camp hosting – Camp hosts help national park rangers during the high season and receive free camping in exchange. Contact national parks department in the relevant state for details.
Selling goods and services – many travellers sell goods (such as art and crafts) or services (such as hairdressing, massage, trade skills) to make extra cash. If you hope to operate in a van park, seek permission from the management first. Markets are also great places to sell craft items and some services; contact the local council for information.
