The Activity Finder

senior activity events

How do I search for an activity?

The YOURLifeChoices activity finder has been programmed specifically to search for postcodes and for certain words, or even a combination of both. For example if you live in Glen Iris, Victoria, your postcode would be 3146. So you enter 3146 into the activity finder and it will show any related searches in your area. If you cannot find something in your area that you like, type in a specific word for example flower. This will show you all activities Australia wide related to that word!

Visit our activity finder page now!

How do I add an activity?

On the activity finder page, you can click on the “Add your own activity here link” or simply click here now.

*Please note when you are adding an activity that if you do not fill in all the required areas, that it will not submit, so if there is no details for that area, put in a dash.*

Winter lights

During the season when the days are short and dark, the sky above Federation Square is awash with warm light from the ground below.

The Light in Winter returns to Federation Square for the fourth year, celebrating community and light and adding some much needed light and warmth to the dark days of winter.  From 4 June to 4 July, the month-long program of light-based artwork displays, winter Solstice celebration and community events is something worth getting out of the house to enjoy.

Hit the slopes

If you’re caught up in Winter Olympics fever and would love to try your hand at skiing, age need not be a barrier.

To those living overseas, Australia may not be well known for its ski resorts and snow covered mountains. However, for a few short winter months, skiing and snow sports can be enjoyed in some of the most picturesque settings.

All of Australia’s snow capped mountains offer an amazing family getaway and there is little more exhilarating than finishing a ski run. From downhill, to snowboarding, to cross-country, snow skiing is a healthy family activity that is an avalanche of fun.

Want to give skiing a go?  There are many friendly ski clubs throughout Australia that offer accommodation, lessons and the chance to meet new people.  For more information on your nearest ski resort and club, visit ski.com.au.

If you’re fortune enough to have Mt Buller as your nearest resort, or don’t mind travelling, take advantage of their special pricing for skiers over 65 years of age.

Car boot sales

You don’t need to log onto eBay to get rid of items of moderate value, you can host your own garage sale or participate in car boot sales.

A garage sale is where you operate a sale at your own place of residence - normally operating from your garage. You can post signs around your neighbourhood, on the internet, on sites such as www.garagesales.com.au and www.egaragesales.com.au, and in local newspapers to attract a large crowd to the sale.

Car boot sales are operated with the approval of local councils and consist of you pulling up your car into a selected lot and paying a service fee to rent the area, while you sell items from you car boot (car is not required, you can set up a table and sell from there).

To find the next Car boot sale in your area, contact your local council.

Get your motor running

Whether looking for an unusual birthday gift, some way to woo a loved one or just something to do for the hell of it, a trip on the back of a Chopper motorbike will be sure to get your blood pumping.

After years of commuting for hours each day and the stresses of running a computer repair business, Alan Maxwell decided to treat himself to a Harley Davidson motorbike. However, it was a Chopper 4 motorbike that stole his heart and gave him a way out of the rat race.

Alan’s passion for his Chopper, equipped to carry a driver and three passengers, led to the creation of a new business venture, Tours on Trike.  Whether you’re looking for a set tour around Melbourne or wish to create your own itinerary, Tours on Trike is an unusual and fun way to feel the wind in your hair, without the effort of having to drive yourself.

For more information on tours and special offers, visit Tours on Trike.

On your bike

If the current Tour de France has inspired you to get on your bike, then you may wish to consider taking part in the 2010 Tour Down Under.  There’s one week left to take advantage of the Early Bird registration prices.

Maybe you’re not quite the next Contador or Armstrong but taking part in the 2010 Tour Down Under’s Mutual Community Challenge is an ideal way to experience the buzz of a big race.  The Mutual Community Challenge Tour will be held on Stage Four of the Tour Down Under, from Norwood to Goolwa, on Friday 22 July 2010.  Those wishing to take part can choose from one of three ride options, designed to suit all skills and experience.  Book before 5pm on Friday 31 July 2009 and save on the registration fee.

Farm walks

Christmas markets may be thin on the ground in July but there is still plenty of opportunity to pick up some goodies on a Mudgee Farm Walk.

Designed to give people a taste and understanding of just how good organic produce can be, monthly farm walks in Mudgee allow people to visit and experience a working farm. Launched by Mudgee Fine Foods, the walks will be held on the third Sunday of every month, the day after the Mudgee Farmers Market.  Each month, walks will commence at 9am, 10am and 12pm, with each walk taking in a different farm.  Tickets cost $5 per person of $10 for a family and include all three farms, fantastic value for money.

So why not head along to Mudgee on 19 July and pick up some fresh organic produce for your Christmas in July dinner.

For more information, visit Mudgee Fine Foods.

Brain gain

Sometimes all you need to get your brain in gear is the seed of an idea so why not pop along to Adelaide’s 6th Festival of Ideas for some inspiration.

For a break to refresh and stretch your mind, Adelaide’s Festival of Ideas will be held from 9-12 July 2009.  More than 30 thinkers from home and abroad will be Pushing the Limits on hot topics such as genetic engineering, population, health, water, astrophysics and freedom of speech.

If any of these topics have whetted your appetite, then pop along to one of the 50-plus free daytime sessions.  For more information, visit The Festival of Ideas.
