100 not out
If 69-year old Helen Searle needed inspiration to get active, she didn’t have to look far. Her mother and fellow athlete, Ruth Frith, is not only competing in the World Master Games in Sydney this weekend, the 100-year old is also almost blind.
Every day we read stories of people who refuse to let disabilities or advancing years stop them from doing the things in life for which they have a passion. Yet rarely is a story as awe-inspiring as Ruth’s. Ruth is a sprightly centenarian, who credits her love of athletics, since she was a child, with keeping her in good shape – she doesn’t believe in diets.
Holding the world record for 100 metres, long jump, triple jump and all the throws since she was 85, Ruth maintains that her sporting prowess should be what all the fuss is about and not the fact that she’s 100-years old.
Need some inspiration to get yourself moving? Watch Ruth in action
Support wheelchair sports
Sports people provide inspiration to many, young and old but there are fewer who deserve our respect and support more than those who still compete despite being confined to a wheelchair.
Wheelchair Sports Victoria (WSV) are hosting the inaugural Australian Paralympic Youth Games (APYG) this week until 11 October. The games will take place in Melbourne’s premier sporting venues included the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre and Olympic Park.
Young athletes from Australia and around the world will be competing in athletics, swimming, wheelchair basketball, table tennis, 7-a-side soccer and wheelchair tennis, no mean feat from the confines of a wheelchair. These young, accomplished athletes refuse to be hindered by their disabilities and are an inspiration to all.
Entry to the events are free and offer a great opportunity to see some of the paralympians of the future in action. To find out what’s on and when, visit Wheelchair Sports Victoria.
Sporting chance
Sport can be as gentle or high-impact as the participant desires but sometimes all that stops people from trying a new sport is knowing where to start.
Australians love their sport and there are plenty of opportunities out there to have a go.
Ten pin bowling
Formed in 1992 to cater for bowlers 45 years and over, the Australian Tenpin Bowling Seniors Organisation (ATBSO) aims to bring senior Australians together. With the sport’s 2009 Australian National Championship being held in ACT from 18 to 28 September 2009, there’s plenty going on for those who want to have some fun with friends and those who want to compete for the title!
For more information, visit ATBSO.
