AboutSeniors subscriber, Shirley, has asked for some information regarding community interaction and learning in regards to computers and the internet. AboutSeniors has covered the issues of Computer clubs, internet allowances, online diary’s and $250 computers.

Australian Seniors Computer Clubs Association
Australian Seniors Computer Clubs Association (ASCCA) is the national peak body for seniors and technology. ASCCA is represented in every state and territory of Australia and ASCCA associated clubs are a great way to learn new skills or share your computer skills through clubs and groups. If you are interested in learning more about computers or have a wealth of information to volunteer, visit ASCCA.

Communication allowance
As part of the Government’s Making Ends Meet package, the telephone allowance issued by Centrelink has been extended to include internet access. Those who qualify can now receive $33 per quarter, per household, to assist with the costs of maintaining a telephone and internet connection to their home.
For more information, view the Telephone Allowance fact sheet.

Broadband for Seniors
Broadband for Seniors aims to increase the confidence and skills of older Australians in using computers and the internet, helping to build their community participation and social inclusion. Under Broadband for Seniors the Australian Government intends to engage a single service delivery organisation to deliver the program nationally by establishing around 2,000 internet kiosks for seniors in community organisations across Australia.
