Age Pension eligibility age

FONT SIZE: A+ A-

Under the Pension Sustainability Reforms in 2009, the Federal Government announced an increase in the Age Pension eligibility age. YOURLifeChoices subscriber John has heard conflicting reports and is unsure if he will actually be eligible to apply for the Age Pension.

Q. John
My date of birth is 13 October 1962 and my wife’s is 24 March 1963 and we would like to know if we will be eligible for the Age Pension as I have heard varying comments?

A.
Currently, the eligibility age for the Age Pension is 65 years for men and for women it varies depending upon date of birth.

From 2017 the eligibility age for the Age Pension will gradually start to increase to 67 for both men and women, by 2023.

Given the date of birth of both you and your wife, this will mean you will not be able to claim an Age Pension until you are 67 years of age. There are also other qualifying factors, such as asset and income limits, which determine whether or not you are eligible for an Age Pension, but given that this is sometime off for you both, it is impossible to say exactly what they will be.
