Are you insured?

14th Jan 2011

As the devastation reeked by the recent floods becomes evident, people naturally start to worry about how they will rebuild their lives and replace their possessions. Some insurance companies do not cover flood damage however, customers of Apia can have peace of mind that they are covered.

Until the flood waters subside, there is little which can be done to start the process of rebuilding and replacing homes and possessions but there are some steps which can help speed things up. Apia customers should contact the 24 hour helpline on 13 50 50 to lodge a claim or access assistance from an Apia team member. However, the higher than usual number of claims may result in a longer waiting time so here are some tips to consider:

· your personal safety is priority, do not attempt any temporary repairs or clean up which may put you in harm’s way
· never walk or drive through floodwater, even if it looks shallow
· take direction from emergency personnel and evacuate when advised to

Also, when you are able to return to your home and only if it is safe to do so, you may wish to:
· keep your home ventilated where possible to minimise the build up of mould
· remove flood damaged carpet and flooring, keeping a small sample on site or taking a photograph of the back where the make and brand is stamped, to show the assessor
· keep a record of anything you throw out in the clean-up and where possible, keep the manufacturers’ manuals
· take photos of what you are removing from the home

Cover for flood and storm damage is standard on all home and contents insurance policies provided by Apia. This is also the case for policies issued by Suncorp and GIO.
Depending on the level of cover you have, Apia may be able to assist with emergency funding to provide accommodation when necessary.
