Beginner's Guide to Facebook

2nd Mar 2012

There are many facets to Facebook which are fun, social and actually somewhat addictive. It is a very entertaining way to keep in contact with friends and family, and with this simple guide, YOURLifeChoices will show you how.

The creators of Facebook have spawned a language of their own. In order for you to understand most of this guide, you will first need to understand the online lingo.

Profile – Your profile is your homepage. It is made up of all your information, your profile picture, and of course your wall. It is basically a mini webpage which you control.
Wall
 – The wall is the area on your profile page where your status updates are posted and friends' messages appear. Depending on your security settings, anything you post on your status or a friend's wall can be seen by your entire network of friends.
Status Update – A personal message from you, posted on your own profile.
Comment – When a friend posts a status or posts on your wall, you can simply comment directly on their action by clicking a button and typing your text in the drop down box below.
Like – When someone comments, or posts on your wall, or uploads a funny picture, Facebook gives you the option of ‘liking’ their action with the simple press of a button.
Post – A public message which you post on your friends' walls to start a conversation.
News Feed – ‘Pictures’, ‘Status Updates’, ‘Posts’ and ‘Videos’ which are posted by you or your friends appear in the News Feed, to ensure that you are kept informed of the current goings on of all your Facebook friends.
Message Inbox – You also have an inbox, a somewhat reduced version of an email inbox whereby you can communicate with your Facebook friends away from the prying eyes of the larger Facebook community.
Private Message – You create private messages in your Message inbox. These can be between two people, or you can create ‘threads’ of many people having private discussions.
Tagging – When uploading pictures on the site, a huge part of Facebook is ‘tagging’ yourself in the picture, so the picture is then connected to your profile.
Poke – Somewhat of a silly part of Facebook, you can ‘poke’ a friend, which sends them an online greeting. Has been the subject of online derision, and creator Mark Zuckerberg has slowly tried to phase out the action.

Thanks for this information on using Facebook, it is a great outline of features. HOWEVER - I think that most people who use the internet are now aware of or part of Facebook. I find that many many people with grandkids, for instance, have facebook accounts and keep in touch with family members and friends. I think it is a bit patronising to follow the idea that people in their 50's 60's and beyond dont yet use facebook like the rest of the community.

Hey, could you make a guide about games on Facebook. Just, my nephew was playing this game on Facebook- http://apps.facebook.com/slots_farm/?sf. I tried it myself and I kind of liked it! So some info about the different other entertainment features would be really helpful, since as I see FB is not only a social networking website these days, but also a multifunctional website.

I have heard of Facebook but I`m not a member although it`s looking as if I`ll have to become one. The site I had been using has shown an"Error 404" message for a week now so I`m guessing it has closed down. Thankfully I had some private email addresses of friends to keep in touch but they are all asking me for my Facebook account, or whatever you call it. It looks very much as if I`m going to have to join. I`ve read these instructions so many times you first posted it and although it sounds easy enough I`m terrified of the reports I`ve heard about Facebook. They range from the murder of people who give out too much info about themselves, I`d be more guilty of not giving out enough, to having a lot of junk email sent to you possibly with viruses and such in them. With my family at the other end of Aust I really have no one to help me if things go wrong. So to suezan36 it`s most definately not patronising to have had this among all the technicall stuff this great site gives us. As you can see I`ve held this page in my Favorites and keep coming back to it to see what to do for simply ages but as yet still haven`t got the nerve to join Facebook, maybe one day!
