Budget airlines take to the skies

8th Nov 2011
Debbie McTaggart

With more travellers mindful of the rising cost of air travel, budget airlines are becoming more appealing. Australian travellers will soon have two new low-cost options when booking their next trip.

AirAustralia, previously known as Strategic Airlines, is rebadging and offering flights from Brisbane to Honolulu from $499, with more routes planned by the end of the year.

Singapore Airlines has also announced its new low-cost airline, Scoot, which will fly between Singapore and Australia, commencing next year.

Are the days of the full service airline numbered? Would you be happy to fly with a budget airline?

Yes! The unions have destroyed them, and ultimately will destroy this free society in which we now live .

wow. The unions which go to court to get lowest wage and all emtitilements despite employers begging poor EVERY time are at fault? Interesting view. I used to think I would pay more for premium service (like QANTAS) but they don't promote or compete on that PR. I don't see QANTAS as premium now. Give more for the money (even safety quarantees) or go head to head with cheapies? Cheapies will win there so market what you have or disappear Qantas :(

The unions aren't to blame for the greed of the privatised airline Qantas. This nation was built and our lifestyle owes much to the union movement. Naturally the airline will try to maximise profits for the shareholder but this should not be at the expense of the workers. Remember without loyal staff there is no airline. I will always opt for a qantas flight but if they can't provide for my needs of course I will look elswhere.
