Flattering faces

20th Jan 2012
Rachel Tyler Jones

Over a lifetime your skin goes through a number of changes. The two most dramatic periods of change are puberty and menopause. During menopause many women find that their skin dries out, while others develop combination or acne-prone skin. This means the way we care for our skin and apply make up needs a rethink.

Heavy powders will emphasise large pores and metallic or creamy eye shadow can leave your eyes looking lined. But where do you find out what works well? The following videos and websites will give you a great range of tips and tricks to flatter your new face and keep you looking fresh.

A fantastic all-rounder video to get you started. It goes through the basics of foundation, blush, eye makeup and lip colour.

Hi Chippies. Good to see you are still young and interested in looking good. Why not go to some pharmacies, department stores etc. where they have make up/skin care people who you can talk to. They usually give you a make over for free if you ask them for help. If they want to charge you then go somewhere else. Remember it's not your age that makes any of the above tips unusable - they can all work for you.

This is all very fine for the rest of your face but the eye makeup is a challenge when you can't see a thing without your glasses. I put my eye makeup on and then have to have a look and see how good my guesswork was :-) I have tried magnifying mirrors.

I have found that the mineral makeups are so much easier to apply as you can't get too much on, or settling in lines around lips etc. yet miraculously they don't dry out my skin. Can just put a wee bit more over obvious age spots and they are minimised. Unlike liquid makeup with powder on top I don't find the minerals accentuate any lines.
There are even eye shadows available in the minerals but same problem with not easily being able to see the effect when you need glasses to apply - but if overdone (when viewed with your glasses on) they are easily lightened by just brushing over with a clean brush until they appear lighter. Best of luck.

Hi - I need glasses to find my way out of bed, and couldn't be without a USA product - "Big Eyes" Magic Focus mirror. Unlike ordinary magnifying mirrors, this one is optically ground, and you just hold it closer or further away until your eyes/face come into focus. It's expensive though and hard to find in Australia, plus postage from the USA is expensive too. Still worth thinking about though. I found a USA seller on Ebay, and messaged her to ask if she would place the mirror I wanted on her Australian Ebay site, which she kindly did. For me, it's a godsend!

PS - Be prepared for an awful shock when you first use it - you'll see things you've never seen on your face before!!!

Hi Chippies, I have had a free makeover at a local pharmacy - "Pricelines". They have a set date and times to choose from. I know they are a national group so try them. You get to choose the brand of make-up you want to try too. You could try the mineral ones there too.

I'd like to see how to make up hollow eyes - you know, where the skin has sunken right into the eye socket.
