Help with losing weight

1st Jan 2012

Many Australians make resolutions at the start of the year but only around 15 per cent actually see them through. After the excesses of the festive season it’s hardly surprising that the number one resolution is to lose weight and now there’s a handy planner to help you reach your goal.

Launched early last year, the Federal Government’s Swap It, Don’t Stop It campaign is aimed at informing people of the benefit of making healthier lifestyle changes rather than simply giving up everything they enjoy. The associated website now offers a free 12-week planner to help people set short and long-term healthier lifestyle goals and give them the tools they need to succeed.

The planner can be used to help you make choices by simply swapping activities, meal choices and recipe ingredients. You can set your goals and monitor your progress by using the planner online, downloading it or using it as an App.

According to the 2007-08 National Health Survey, 68 per cent of adult men and 55 per cent of adult women are overweight. Action needs to be taken now to halt this worrying trend, which if it continues, will see 80 per cent of all Australian adults and a third of all children classed as overweight by 2020.

To see if the Swap It planner can help you achieve your healthier lifestyle goals, watch the ‘how to’ video or simply register and get started.

Would a planner such as Swap It help you to make better health choices? Do you think people will or will not change their lifestyles regardless of the Government's campaigns?

Hi, I think the swap it campaign is great but I thought i would post that I lost 20 kgs using a completely free website http://www.calorieking.com.au/. It has menu's and shopping lists and a diet diary. It calculates your calories for the foods you eat and there are forums for friendships and help. The swap it campaign is goood but on calorie king you actually have a visual means of seeing why you put on weight in the first place. For instance, I did it because my cholesterol was high. I would write in "steak" and it would calculate my calories, protein, fat etc and there was saturated fat in it even though I had trimmed all the fat!! I didn't know thatmeat had saturated fat even in the lean bits. I also didn't realize how many calories in so called healthy food...like avocado. Avocado is really good for you but you should spread it on your toast not eat half an avocado with shrimp and seafood sauce on it. I learned so much...even cereal which sometimes can he healthy is high in calories after you add the milk. I learned to keep track of the fibre I ate and how much I drank and the most wonderful tool of all on this site is the exercise bar. When you've used up all your calories the bar goes red and when you exercise and write the exercise into your diary the line 'shrinks" back (like a thermometer) showing you how many calories you've used up doing that exercise which also then allows you to eat more if you wish. It took me a year to lose 20 kgs. :)

Hi Young at Heart, That sounds like a great site as I am getting back into a healthy routine. Nine months ago my husband and I used to go to gym twice a week , play tennis and do tai chi plus I did a dance class. We had deaths and serious illnesses in our families so a program went out the door. We are both starting getting fit again so will certainly look at that site. Thanks for that information. Regards Judy.
