ISIS malicious email warning

The Australian Communications and Media Authority is warning computer users against opening any emails which may refer to an ISIS threat, after it received scores of reports about emails with the subject line: ‘ISIS attacks in Sydney.’ Users are being warned not to open the email or the attached files.

“New emails referring to ISIS terrorism activities carry a malicious attachment that can be used to infect your computer,” a warning from the government’s Stay Smart Online service states. “Clicking on the attachment could result in malicious code being installed that allows an attacker to take control of your computer.”

The body of the email reads:

ISIS has warned Australian Police today about new attacks in Sydney. Attached the places in word file which ISIS planning to attack in Sydney this year 2015.

The email claims to contain information about new attacks by the organisation in Sydney, and falsely cites Australian Police and other organisations so as to appear legitimate.

As always, we recommend YOURLifeChoices members to take care when opening any emails which may appear suspicious or which they do not recognise. If in doubt, send it to junk.
