NBN price hike shock

22nd Jul 2011

Internode has become the first Internet Service Provider to disclose prices for internet and phone services delivered by the National Broadband Network (NBN). What will this mean for your hip pocket?

In a blog post, Internode has stated that the NBN’s promise that consumers will be able to access Broadband services for a comparable cost to what they are paying now is ‘untenable’ in their eyes.

Original estimates from Exetel (also onboard with the NBN) predicted that the average household would pay a bill of less than $20 per month. Internode’s recent price disclosure, with the cheapest available plan starting at $59.95 a month has caused outrage amongst consumers.

Internode has defended their decision, blaming the NBN for flaws in their charging model and warns regional communities that they may be charged significantly higher prices to city users. The Labor Government has stated that once other companies release their prices, healthy competition could bring the services down in price.

Internode’s cheapest plan (at $59.95) is available at the slower speed of 12 megabits a second and must be purchased as a bundle which includes both home phone and internet. Downloads are limited to 30 gigabytes. As a comparison, Telstra currently offer a 50 gigabyte plan for $59.95. The most expensive broadband plan will supply 1 terabyte of downloads, at the top speed of 100 megabytes a second, with a whopping price tag of $190 a month.

So what does this mean for consumers?
For the NBN to be successful, a large percentage of internet users will be required to sign up to its services. Price is an important issue for most internet users and if accessing the NBN is going to be more costly than average ADSL plans, then many consumers will choose to stay with their current provider to save costs. Is the NBN really supplying ‘Broadband for all Australians’? And will other service providers bring Internode’s prices down? Time will tell.

Lovely, I don't think. Blasted idiots can never get anything right & I guess it is something else that Julia will be blamed for, giving that creep Abbott something else to crow about.

I was involved in a forum about the NBN, I stated in the forum (after Labor pushed this through) that it would not only NOT help me, but the service would cost me more for what I am already getting now, if these figures are correct it will cost me at least $100 a month for what I am getting now and paying $50 for, all politicians are crooks and none can be trusted, they lie, they cheat, they steal

Perhaps we need to wait and see other Internet Providers prices before needing to discuss Internode's prices as fact - also will there be "bundles" to compare or just one price as phone will be VOIP?

pate, it's the legal JOB of the Opposition to expose and oppose gross stupidity and incompetence of the Government of the day, in this case the moronic Greens/Labor alliance of chronic blunderers and tree-hugging no-hopers. It is called democracy.

It may be the oppositions legal job MudGeko, but surely a legal job should contain more than I disagree because it is Julia's idea, which is all that Abbott can ever say he never gives a real reason why he disagrees, he just raves on.

It is always about the money. The service and concern has never been for the customer. I am a pensioner, live alone and use the Internet for shopping, keeping in touch with family overseas and friends here. But I will disconnect altogether before I get sucked into another heap of spin. my cost per month is app $150.00. This includes adsl, line rental, phone calls, and TBox. If I want to rent a movie that's extra. It is a huge amount to pay for this service, but I need it, so they win, I lose. But isn't that what it's all about. I am so disgusted with the whole lot of them. You cannot discriminate from any of the parties. They are all power hungry ego maniacs and are indifferent to the needs of the people. They wouldn't do anything for the normal working wage. ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY.

The NBN was suppose to give us a cheaper access to the internet which is why we're forking out about 45 plus billion dollars on it. Anyone who believed that is really stupid!! Do you think that anyone in business will give it cheaper than the current prices provided by the other services? Let's assume for ine minute that the NBN is a lot cheaper than current providers, then, do you believe that they will tell you that? They will still charge a price slightly or equal to what you get now to obviously make more money because this is what Australian is like... everything is more expensive than anywhere else in the world. This NBN will end up just like the petrol prices and is a total wasted exercise and spent money that we don't have. I'll rather use the money to build new hospitals, hire more nurses and doctors rather than waste it on something that we already have anyway and continously changing. How FAST do we need to be? And if we are fast enough, then, how many would take advantage of it in a REAL technical way rather than just dowmloading music and playing games? The Labor party is just wants to get it through regardless to simply say that they have accomplished something in their time. What a lot of.....

Wait and see is my motto - $60 for phone and 3) Gigs and 12 Mbps faster and only $6 more than I pay right now for 1500/264 plus Telstra phone budget.
But will it still be so when I finally get NBN fitted to my house? I dont think so!
also beats the whole reason for the independents going for it - as rural areas will still not be serviced for similar cost to the cities and was this not the reason given for the huge outlay! Is this just another debacle by Labor and waste of money?

Eftel is 250GB ADSL $24.99 a month for first 6 months than 49.99 a month. Far better than NBN for what it gives.

Hmmm... I smell another nasty Abbott scare campaign coming on.
Thanks Ian for a sensible response from someone who already has NBN.

I am surprised none of the commentators regarding the NBN rates have contacted O one for seniors website for their rates for pensioners
