No Scan No Fly

6th Feb 2012
Ged McMahon

From July this year passengers travelling through Australian International Airports can be subjected to compulsory body scans. The Gillard Government will introduce the legislation this week after successful trials of the scanners were conducted in Melbourne and Sydney.

Initial concerns regarding privacy and health have been addressed by the new technology being used. The scanner projects a generic human outline and merely alerts security staff to the areas on the body that need to be checked. Once the passenger has been cleared, the image is deleted from the system. The actual scan is the equivalent of passive exposure to a mobile phone being used several metres away.

The scan will not be compulsory for all passengers, but if you are asked to be scanned it is compulsory. Failure to comply will prevent you from boarding your flight.

The new legislation is sure to spark an emotional response from many who are concerned about their privacy. How do you feel about it? Do you agree with Ged’s take on the issue? Will you be embarrassed to be scanned? Or does it not bother you?

As far as I am concerned they can scan me till the cows come home, I have nothing to hide, but will the scan be at the entry point of the plane or at the entry point of the airport lounges (where the current scans are) if it is at the latter it would mean EVERYONE gets scanned, even those seeing family or friends off

Currently, we are scanned walking through the black arch contraption and it is a quick procedure. I often am then asked to provide extra time for a body scan with another hand-held contraption and this is ok too. As long as the new body scan devise is not too slow or uncomfortable, it could be an improvement.

I travelled in USA LA & New york and had to go thru the mandatory scanning - that is fine and I am happy to be kept safe however there were a few issues, the main on is that at LA every had to remove their shoes and walk on the floor app 8 metres from where shoes were removed to where you entered the scanner and simillar when exiting the scanner. I have a big problem with hygiene on everyones behalf - not good enough. I did raise the issue at the time and my comments in regards to hygiene did not go down well let me tell you. It will be interesting to see how this hygiene issue is handled in Oz.
