Solo travel suggestions

13th Dec 2010

Once you’ve decided to take a solo trip, finding a suitable package or travel solution which doesn’t cost a fortune, is easier said than done. However, there are options out there if you know where to look.

Tours for singles
aRendezvous operates singles only tours but don’t be put off by thinking that its goal is purely to match make between travel companions. While some travellers on these tours may be single and looking for love, there are also people who are happy being on their own but who like to travel with others, or those who are part of a couple but their partner doesn’t want to, or can’t travel. aRendezvous operates tours within a specific age range to try and ensure like-minded individuals travel together, but will happily consider those out with the age range if deemed suitable.

Solo travel – Asia
Asia is one of the most fascinating continents to visit but when faced with going there alone, many people would have second thoughts. Travel IndoChina arranges small group tours, with numbers varying between 12 and 18, to all areas of Asia. Cambodia, India, Japan and Vietnam are just some of the countries of which you can enjoy a flavour. Travel Indo China also offers a ‘willing to share’ option, where, if you are happy to share with someone, you don’t pay a single supplement. And the bonus is that if no one is available to share, you get a room to yourself with no supplement.

Solo travellers club
Many travel agencies have responded to the need for affordable solo travel deals by forming solo travellers clubs. Through such clubs you can meet like-minded travel companions before you head off on a trip, suggest places to visit and find someone to share with, thus avoiding single supplements. Seniors Holiday Travel is one such agency which has formed a club and there are planned trips to Egypt and Italy next year.

I`ve done quite a bit of solo travelling in the last 10 years and to start with I use to ask the company to find me a travelling companion but now I pay the single suppliment. The reason, well it`s quite simple really, I snore, apparently! In Canada on a tour where the company found me a lovely lady to room with after the first night when she hardly slet at all I ended up buying her earplugs!!! It`s the first time anyones told me I snore so was very surprised. I`ve only had one tour when I found it difficult being by myself as a number knew each other before the tour and kept very much to themselves. I`ve never done a cruise or train travel holiday though so don`t know how they would go. Most bus companies get you to swap seats each day, not THE one though, so you could meet everyone.

I am planning to travel alone in the near future and the first thing I would ask was to put me with someone whos doesnt snore. I dont snore and my husband and i sleep in separate rooms because he snores very loud and thrashes around ( sleep apnea) That is very considerate of you tathra to room alone because you snore. Try John Howies music tours if your a single traveller, they are great and good for singles and couples, he has one on next year to ireland and scotland that I hope to go on. Seat swapping is an excellent idea, I think they should also swap the single people around with each other if they would like to.

some people dont like tours, but I like the fact you dont have to do anything just sit back and relax and I love to meet other like minded people, you can have some weird people on tours I know , but you only have to put up with them for a few weeks and you can also meet some lovely people who become good friends. I would not go on my own at age 58, i would not be confident enough .

Everybody is different. I bought my own camper trailer last year and travelled up the centre for four months alone. I loved every minute. My sister and I went to Peru two years ago and I would love to go back for an extended visit, but havent worked up the courage to go alone. I dont like tours, I like to do my own thing

Hey chippies,
No I meant not go backpacking on my own overseas. sorry I put the wrong thing, I would definately go on my own any other time, even camping in a trailer or caravaning if I could just learn to back the van. In fact I am going on a trip on my own to the UK in September. and yes chipies I am just a young chick, thankyou. I still have a lot of living to do and am going to do it whilst I am young and in good health. I am spending my 4 kids inheritance and they tell me "go for it Mum" they are all doing well in life, have travelled already and have well paying jobs. I on the other hand have not done much in the way of travel. I have raised 4 children now its my turn Yee Haaaa
