Spooky city tours on a budget

FONT SIZE: A+ A-

Ghost tours are a fun way to hear the lesser-known histories of Australia’s capital cities, all under the cloak of darkness. Just be careful when developing your photos – you might get a surprise.

Sydney - $10.30
The tour of Saint Bartholomew’s Church and the adjoining graveyard is a truly spooky experience, especially if you happen upon the particularly troublesome ghost who resides on the site. The tour is good value for money – your $10 buys you five hours of ghost stories plus supper.
To take your chances call Robyn at the Blacktown City Council on 02 9839 6087

Melbourne - $20
The most famous ghost tour in Melbourne is also the cheapest. Run by Drew Sinton, owner of Haunted Bookshop and presenter of the Haunted Australia show on channel 31, the two-hour walking tour begins at the bookshop and winds its way through the back alleys of Melbourne’s CBD.
For more information visit The Haunted Melbourne Ghost Tour website.

Hobart - $10
Hobart’s rich history of convicts and bushrangers makes it the perfect place to spot ghosts. The Penitentiary Chapel ghost tour explores the 1800s convict building where murder, mystery and intrigue were rife.
To find out more visit the Penitentiary Chapel website.

Perth - $25
Discover Western Australia’s only World Heritage Listed building by torchlight. The tour through the main cell block, solitary confinement, whipping post, the gallows and the morgue is not for the faint of heart.
To book your ghostly experience visit the Freemantle Prison website.

Brisbane - $25
Did you know that Brisbane was voted by National Geographic as the second most haunted city in the world? Experience it for yourself by taking the walking ghost tour through the CBD with Ghost Tours Pty Ltd Haunted Brisbane Ghost Tour.
Visit the Ghost Tours website for more information.

Adelaide - $28
Many Adelaide ghost tours include extras such as dinner or an overnight stay. If you prefer just a few hours of frightening fun then the Adelaide Gaol ghost tour is the one for you.
To book your visit go to the Adelaide Gaol website.

Canberra - $88
Tim the Yowie man seems to have the monopoly on ghost tours in Canberra with his company Destiny Tours. At $88 this is not one we would recommend if you are on a budget. If anyone knows of a similar tour at a lower price please share your knowledge by commenting below.

Darwin – Free
If anyone is looking to set up a professional ghost tour then Darwin is the place to be. We couldn’t find any currently running, but the Fannie Bay Gaol is a well known ghost hotspot, and entry is free for anyone wishing to walk themselves through the gaol-turned-museum.
