Super foods all women should eat

5th May 2011

What we eat has a huge impact on our health, with certain foods being high in fatty acids and antioxidants. Super foods can help the anti-ageing process or fight diseases such as cancer, so which foods should you ensure are included in your diet?

Cinnamon
Antioxidant is most commonly related to berries, dark chocolate and red wine. But with anti-inflammatory and anti-ageing properties and also believed to lower blood sugar and help protect against diabetes, cinnamon is a true super food.

For a little naughtiness to accompany your super food, why not try Sandi’s Rhubarb and Cinnamon Teacake.

Watercress
More commonly used as a garnish, water cress is an abundant source of vitamins C, B, K, E, iron, calcium and zinc. This lovely green leaf is also packed with antioxidants and is a very good at flushing excess fluid from the body – ironic really given its name.

So what to do with watercress? Sometimes the simplest recipes are the best way to enjoy good ingredients – give Tony’s Watercress Soup a try.

Popcorn
Popcorn may be your favourite snack at the cinema but it’s more than just junk food. In its naked state popcorn is high in fibre, full of antioxidants and contains large level of polyphenols, which can protect against heart disease and cancer.

Of course, plain popcorn is not the most appetising snack so why not try one of our naughty-but-nice popcorn coating recipes?

Chia seeds
Chia seeds pretty much taste of nothing but their texture can add a much needed crunch to salads and soups. High in omega-3, fibre and low-GI carbohydrates, a sprinkling on your food can certainly do you no harm. Why not sprinkle some on Tony’s Watercress Soup.

Where do you get watercress? I 've never seen it in the supermarket, so I guess you have to hunt down some seedlings and grow your own.

I sprinkle a good teaspoon of cinnamon on my porridge then follow with 1 heaped dessertspoon of LSA, stir through, some berries, then soy milk. It tastes good.
