The Giant’s Causeway
| |
The Giant’s Causeway has long been voted the gem of the North Antrim Coast and with the doors of a brand new visitor centre opening in September next year, what better excuse could there be to plan your visit to Ireland?
The North of Ireland is simply brimming with natural beauty, history and local legends. And just 90 minutes from Belfast, The Giant’s Causeway is a particularly amazing sight to see. The basalt columns that scatter the Antrim Coast were once thought to have been created by giants (hence the moniker), but the more scientifically-minded are inclined to believe that they were created by volcanic eruptions that occurred roughly 60 million years ago. Full audiovisual presentations of the myths and legends from the area are on offer for those wanting to delve deeper on this topic.
The new visitor centre will be open all year round (excluding Christmas and New Year’s Day) and is located about 1km from the Causeway itself. A complimentary shuttle-bus service is offered to the stones or, if the weather allows, the walk is also enjoyable. The centre also has a tearoom and souvenir shop that are open from March to the middle of November. Want to make a day of it? Head to the Bushmills Distillery where you can have a tipple of the legendary Irish whiskey, stroll along the coastal walk or brave the paralysing heights of the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge.
