Volunteering and Centrelink

9th Sep 2011

If you are receiving Centrelink benefits volunteering can be a great alternative to paid work. Volunteering often won’t affect your payments, however it is important to find out if there are restrictions on the number of hours per week you can volunteer.

Newstart Allowance
If you are aged between 55 and 65 and not doing any paid work you may be eligible for Newstart Allowance. If you carry out at least 15 hours of approved voluntary work per week you will meet the activity test requirements, and you might even have fun doing it. For more information on the activity test requirements, visit Centrelink.gov.au.

Carer Payment
There are a number of different types of carer payments, depending on the age of the person you are caring for. They all allow you to undertake some volunteer work without affecting your payment, but it is important to check Centrelink.gov.au for how many hours your specific payment allows. Remember that all of the hours per week include travel time.
