Melbourne Airport Skybus

12th Aug 2011
Webmaster Drew

I was recently faced with the challenge of getting to Melbourne Airport during afternoon peak-hour on a Friday. Instead of muscling my way through the traffic and paying close to $60 to park my car over the weekend, I decided to take a train and the Skybus to the airport and back the Monday morning.

I purchased two 2-hour full fare tickets for Zone 1 on metlink which came in just under $8. The train from Armadale Station took about 20 minutes to reach Southern Cross Station. I then followed the signs and found the SkyBus area, purchased my return ticket for $26 and boarded the next available bus. The sign said they came every 10 minutes but I didn't wait anymore than 5 minutes!

The bus got me to the airport in less than 25 minutes and I arrived with enough time to spare to purchase a nice cold beer with the money I saved if I caught a taxi. I could have bought a slab of beer for the price I would have saved on parking costs!

Overall, I paid $36 to get to and from the airport, less than the price of a taxi one-way and due to traffic on Friday afternoon and on Monday morning, saved about 40 minutes in commuting time.

I was very much against ever taking the Skybus but after this experience, I would recommend the Skybus to everyone taking a flight!

Wow this information is great, because i travel from East Gippsland, Victoria; and the savings will be fantastic if and when I need to travel to the airport. Thanks for such informative review because i must admit i was sceptical when i saw the skybus picking up passengers.
