avocados
I love my avocados but do not usually buy them as a lot are brown inside due to out of season storage.
But now Shepard avocados are in season. The Shepard avocado has a bright green skin and a more elongated shape, it’s peak season is early autumn (which is now).
Avocados are high in vitamins E and C. Also high in monounsaturated fat and fibre which reduces cholesterol. Good in vitamin K which keep your liver in good nick. Also high in potassium, riboflavin, thiamin, niacin & magnesium.
The Shepard avocado has smooth, green skin with a golden buttery flesh. This variety has the unique distinction of being the only Avocado that doesn't turn brown when cut.
It is unique to Australia so you don't have to worry about country of origin.
It is green when ready to eat - ripeness is judged by a softness of the flesh to touch. They are available at Woolies now.
Yes always my favourite avocado. My brother used to grow them and passionfruit in Ballina so I really miss them fresh from the tree.
To tell when they are ripe I never squeeze the fruit I just push lightly on the stem at the top, if it gives a little then it's ripe.
Usually our avocados when you buy them are hard, so I put them in a paper bag and leave them for one day then take them out. You can also put a banana or apple in the bag as well. But only leave them in the bag for one day as that starts the ripening process and if you leave them too long they will turn to mush inside.
