IVirus and Norton Symantec

my son sorted out my Mac Computer while here was going sooooo slow I thought it's end was Nigh just about had given up on emails for instance as it took so long to load.

the amount of space I had used apparently on the fairly big hard disc was small but he discovered something else had taken up a huge amount and churning  through that had slowed the whole system down.

The virus detectors were working in the background and posting and storing a "log" constantly and had taken over the majority of the disc storage. He could not find a way of turning off or clearing the log so removed Symantec completely.

I now have MacKeeper at his recommendation, he has saved me a heap of money on buying a new computer.

Thanks for sharing that bit of info

Hard to believe that the feature that is supposed to protect your computer is slowly but surely killing it.

It would be worth to get in touch with Norton to let them know of this potential problem .. suppose the logs may be important from the viewpoint if you need to do a system restore but do not know if that is a facility on a Mac.

Can't be bothered Abby, my daughter had tried to get rid of Norton before for me but each week it kept coming up with a renewal request probably that in log too:(

A abby i am just fortunate that my son is so experienced. He did do a back up on a new external hard drive of just my files. The previous external drive I used had filled up very quickly obvious why now. So yes system restore can be done.

Norton used to be one of the best 20 years ago but these days I would not let it near my computer.

If you have Norton it can be a real pain getting rid of it as I have found as it is sometimes loaded with a new computer. It leaves files all over the place which makes them hard to find. There is a Norton removal tool but I am not sure of it's effectiveness.

There are much , much better anti-virus tools available these days. I use E-set but that is my personal preference as I am sure others have their favourites. I just hope it is not Norton though.

Thanks Gerry you are right in fact it had come over from when I had originally bought it for one of my first computers then backed up on to this one. Bit of a virus in itself!

Clean up the junk in your computers with Privazer, it is free.

I guarantee it will clean up more than you ever thought possible that other programmes miss.

Download direct from the developer's site, http://privazer.com/, no ads or malware bundled within.

AwCleaner is another 'must have' free tool which finds *PUPs and toolbars which take over sections of your computer without you knowing, and operates in a different manner to Privazer.

Bleeping Computer is the only site for the developer's product.

*PUPs, are Potentially Unwanted Programs.

Seggie. Aw gee, now I am worried. I've had Norton on my P.C. for many years but I don't download much really, P.C. mostly used for emails and research. Update it a lot myself though it does update on its own. I seem to have plenty of space but poor old virus, like me, is running a bit slow. Mak, not sure whether to use what you suggest. Are they really, truly safe? Remember I'm one of the oldies here.
