Billy Gordon..Qld MP

Wow, things sure happen fast in Queensland.

How on earth was this man ever pre-selected to stand at the election?

He obviously did not disclose his criminal past  which he should have done.

I understand that he has not resigned (and may not).  What a mess for the incoming government.

At least the Premier has done the right thing in expelling him from the party.

Abby

I mentioned the 12 months in relation to holding the position as an MP during tenure. Same with a bankrupt. Not sure how past indescretions might legally stop a person from being elected but maybe go against being endorsed. I have seen no mention of Gordon doing any time.

As an aside Abby. I saw where the man who was found guilty of misreporting ABC childcare finances ( 2 billion owing/collapse ) got a slap on the wrist. Eddie the former boss of ABC got off a while ago. Both living the good life with spouses having ownership of assets or whatever to avoid repercussions for malfeasance. It beggars belief.

ABC learning story

Agree Geoff

The Law is not/or sometimes appears not to be fair or just

Seems very much to be dependent on the Judge, the represetation, the location and when the crime was supposd to have been comitted.

Finally, if we are to ask politicians to tell voters about their criminal pasts then I would suggest that we also ask politicians to tell voters about any civil matters that they've been involved in. Because it doesn't take a genius to work out that we have two systems of justice in this country: one for the rich and one for the poor. If you're a sandstone-educated white man, sipping mimosas harbour-side in Point Piper, then you're unlikely to have had any underhanded dealings channeled through our civil courts where you'll get a slap on the wrist and a fine. If you're Billy Gordon, cutting sugar cane or working in pubs in Far North Queensland, then you can exchange the fine for a prison sentence and the law's casual disinterest for hawkish vigilance.

Worth a read, some valid points raised.
