Coles latest "specials"

I love Danish pastries and decided I would buy some on "special" this week at Coles. $3 for a pack of two.

Decided to read the small print and I mean "small" print on the pack before I purchased.

Well, lo and behold, even though it had the words Coles Bakery on the label the first words before the huge list of ingredients were "Made in Denmark" on one pack, the apple ones I think it was and then I picked up some Scrolls and they were "Made in Belgium". (or could be the other way round...cannot remember)

Decided I would not bother after finding this out and also reading the long list of additives in them.

Obviously they are assembled/ part cooked then frozen over there and finished off here in the Coles bakery.

My question is:  How come Coles were fined for importing bread from Ireland and baking here yet these products are on the shelves.??

Same thing as far as I am concerned.

RADISH,   makes you wonder sometimes just what are we eating,   .i dont normaly buy the lindt choc,   but will get some of that SEA SALT CARAMEL,    on your say so,     i am trying to keep of the chocolate,   for my weight,  no other reason,   i suppose what we dont know wont hurt us,   but it is the fact they are dupping us is not on,

What do you guys find wrong with Danish pastries from Denmark ???

IMO

They sure would taste a lot better than the immitation Danish pastries they make here.

The same goes with fresh fruit from Canada when ours is out of season - sure tastes a lot better than ours old ones from the cool room. I am looking forward to fresh cherries in June already.

I do object to imported fruits and vegs where the hygiene is below our standard and where they use their urine and faeces for fertilizer.

The reason why Coles was pulled up about the bread was that it was advertized as freshly baked

ABBY,   it is not the fact that things come from overseas that i object to,  its being duped thats galling,     like the bread,    say its freshly baked,  but just reheated,  it is lies,  plain and simple,

This is how it is presented onlineCinnamon Swirl Danishes -   2 pack

All I can say it is very nice to get a decent Danish Pastry as opposed to some substitute made here ... why do not people who bake it in Australia call  it Australian Pastry ... because they are trying to dupe the customer .. furthermore it does NOT TASTE like Danish Pastry.

Having spent some time in Denmark I know what Danish Pastry tastes like.

As I said the bread is a different issue to the pastries

Further more the bread was par-baked NOT just reheated ....

Why I object Abby is that on the packet here in my Coles supermarket it says "Coles Bakery" which makes a person think it is made on the premises by Coles.  My local store has an onsite bakery.

It is only when a person takes the trouble to put on their glasses (impossible to read otherwise for sight impaired people) and read the small print and I mean (small print) that you find it is an imported product.

Abby, I see no different between the frozen bread and the frozen danish pastries.  They are both just re-heated (or whatever they do).  The fact is they are made overseas.

I think it is time that there is a section in the bakery where they have a large sign above products that are NOT a product of Australia.

As to them tasting better...they do not I am afraid.  The ones from Bakers Delight are far superior.

Cannot say what your local Coles say ... but hardly think in regard to the fine they got in regard to  fresh bread it would have included the Danish Pastries if applicable... it was not.

Unfortunately there are too many legal loopholes in regard to our food that our government is too slack to control.

The ones from Baker's Delight are NOT Danish Pastry and DO NOT taste like Danish Pastry.... they just ripped the name off from the Danes....for my taste The Baker's Delight has too much sugar.

There you are a Traditional recipe so you can make your own -

Traditional Swedish Recipes

Swedish food tends to be influenced by the seasons with the spicing, and cooking, often reflecting the storage needs of the peasant communitieis of old, as in the case of pickled  herring, freshly salted or smoked meat, or dairy products that have been curdled, boiled or left to mature.

The following recipes are a taste of what you might enjoy when you visit Sweden - or why not try them at home!

Kanelbullar (Traditional Cinnamon buns)Kanelbullar

120g butter
1 tsp salt
1 tbs ground cardamom
750g flour

50g sugar
2 tbs cinnamon

Stage1:

Crumble the yeast in a bowl and stir in a few tablespoons of milk.

Melt the butter and pour the milk on it.

Add the rest of the ingredients and knead the dough in a dough mixer for 10-15 minutes.

Let the dough rise while covered at room temperature for 30 minutes.

Stage 2:

Roll out the dough so it is about 3mm thick and 30cm wide.

Spread the room-temperature butter on top.

Make a mixture of sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle it over the dough.

Roll the dough the long way and cut the roll into about 25 slices.

Place them with the cut edge upward in paper molds.

Place on a baking sheet and let rise under a towel for about 60 minutes or until the buns have doubled in size.

Stage 3:

Beat together the egg and water, brush the mixture carefully on the buns and sprinkle pearl sugar on top.

Bake in the oven (220C) for 5-6 minutes. Allow to cool on a rack.

Haha...I'm sure she'd love that Phyl...had an email last night...the baby is a bit late and Micha is more anxious than the father!! Mom won't have an epidural but wants to have a natural birth. I'm sure the bundle of joy will arrive soon!!

Micha and Mari are in New York aren't they Fleur still quite chilly there after our weather - hope they have time between Baby and Business to catch any of the latest shows.

Jean-Claude's Bouche Noel is fantastic if he still does them for Xmas,  I well remember how popular his Subi shop was when it was the only one he had and open at week-ends had to queue down the pavement to get fresh baked bread, so good.

Hi Viv...no they're actually in Boston pacing the floor!! They have said.. on the way back they'll visit New York...they usually do and by then the weather should be a little better!

I believe both those pastry shops are open this weekend....might nip down there if I have any energy left after yesterday!!

Check out their website Fleur or give them a ring they may not be open.
