Shortens old union still up to dirty tricks

The Victorian Australian Workers Union extended a Howard-era WorkChoices agreement that disadvantaged its members in exchange for a $25,000 payment and a list of employees it could add to its membership lists, the royal commission into trade unions has heard.

The agreement meant that its members were paid less than half of what they would have under a more modern award.

A level one casual cleaner, who worked after-hours or weekends, got $18.14 an hour, while under a new award they would have got $50.17 an hour, or 176 per cent more. A level 3 cleaner working on Sundays got $19.86 an hour instead of $41.44, or 121 per cent more.

Under the deal with Cleanevent, the company sent the union a list of its employees, which was randomly selected and took no account of whether they were already union members, and agreed to pay their memberships.

According to counsel assisting the commission, Jeremy Stoljar SC, the deal inflated the membership of the Victorian AWU, whose secretary was Cesar Melhem, now a member of the Victorian Legislative Council.

Some of the employees, who were unaware they had been signed up to the union, were already paying union fees.

It meant that the Victorian AWU got extra votes on the union’s national body, and more delegates to the Labor Party’s conference, and therefore influence over Labor policy and selection of political candidates.

A side letter contained the agreement to pay up to $25,000 a year to the

Counsel for Mr Melhem suggested that the $25,000 was a “service fee” but Mr Webber said he did not recall that.

Mr Stoljar said the royal commission would examine if union officials broke the Fair Work Act by entering into an agreement which benefited themselves and the company, but which was detrimental to their own members.

It would also examine whether they had falsified accounting records.

Not a topic for general discussion. Cut and paste of article with no link or naming of source and out of character for the general section ie light, general. Plenty of scope with hot topics or political so why burden general section ? Recidivist in this regard. Should have more respect or regard for fellow members who are not desktop warriors and prefer a friendly exchange of pleasant experiences.

Yes I agree with you Geoff by the heading it should be under Political section...

the thread may possibly suggest Hot Topics but no a General Discussion Post.

Its a separate thread which others may choose to take place or not the file it is under is a moot point .

I put it under general discussion not political as Organisations not representing their members but acting in their own interests is not a political matter..

A section for things ‘Not so serious’. Whether you want to share a great joke, some handy tips, discuss some interesting news articles, brag about your football team winning the grand final or any other laid-back topic, this is the place to post it.

Not difficult or complicated to understand is it ?

The interesting news item is taken from today's Australian.

Makes you wonder what organisations are fair dinkum;  or are they all set up to rort members??

Amazing this condition "I do not recall"....seems to becoming more and more prevalant in society .  Maybe we should have a Senate enquiry into it?

You are quite right Radi .. But the blatant case above of ripping off cleaners amongst our lowest paid is despicable  .,

THESE ARE the type of jobs where people DO get under paided,  as they are usually filled by people with no actual skills,  and cannot get work elsewhere,   so they are played on and used by employers,   as they are not the types to speak up,    they are just glad to be working,     its not right,   but its a fact,

Yes cats but we are talking about the people who are supposed to represent them . They are not .. They are lining their own pockets in exchange for low wages for there members..

thought i had written here,  but hasnt come through,   PETE,    isnt there a fair trading organization that would look into this,  ?     unfortunatly , rorting goes on everywhere,   at every level,

Probably Cats but it never seems to happen ..

unfortunatly there is always someone out to rip off decent people in any way they can,   and its usually the most needy that get dudded,        has that magazine with sophie come out yet,?     whats the name again,  ?i did write it down,  but now cant find where i wrote it,     wont be long now,  lol,

It's called Horse Deals Cats and she will be in the August edition . We are up at  Coonabarabran at the moment on a four day interschools event..There are twenty two girls in the Ascham team ..
