Allen's Lollies ditch old favourites

A story published yesterday revealed that iconic lolly company Allen's will be ditching several of its classic lollies because they are no longer popular.

Memorable lollies such as Spearmint Leaves, Marella Jubes, Green Frogs, Oddfellow Mints, Sherbies, Butter Menthols Kids and Jelly Tots have been axed by the country’s largest lolly producer. In addition, more of the company's classic treats, such as bags of Violet Crumbles, have been downsized or changed.

A spokesperson from Allen's said, "We have streamlined the portfolio, deleting Spearmint Leaves and Green Frogs because they weren’t popular and sales had been slowing dropping off over time. We were selling one Green Frog to every 10 Red Frogs," he said.

Even though I hardly eat these lollies now, I did as a child, and the loss of Spearmint Leaves and bags of Violet Crumbles cuts me deeper than it should.

Have you ever felt nostalgic or sad when you found out a product you loved had been discontinued? Why do you think we can become so attached to something as frivolous as lollies?

Ahhh Violet Crumbles ........ haven't seen them around for ages?  Thought they had already been discontinued?  Reminds me also - shame about what happened to the Darrell Lea shops.....I used to loveeee their "big fat fluffy" Toasted Marshmellows....   :-)

Strangely still  have pretty good teeth but hell yeah had my fill of lollies, and not a lot of extra money laying about 'back in the day', but whenever it came my way as a child, I'd be up to the corner store  splashing the cash on either comics or lollies....

Amongst a few of my favourites were clinkers, cobbers, freckles, musk sticks, wagon wheels - which I haven't seen for years, golden roughs - which seem to have shrunk over the years, green spearmint leaves,  fantales, minties, maltesers, licorice all sorts, never been too fussed on Red Skins....Preferred the 'Crunchie bar' in the gold wrapping paper to 'Violet Crumbles', loved  those long strands of twisty licorice...

Always felt clinkers and banana lollies had a sort styrofoam quality if you know I what I mean....and probably best to set aside a good 2-3 hours to chew and munch your way through a Choo Choo Bar which left most with an attractive afterglow of stained black teeth, tongue and lips....Geez ya gotta laugh - absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever.....

But possibly a good thing 'Sugar is the new poison'...

Foxy, very easy to make your own.  Do you want me to put the recipe in the recipes for you ??

Ohhhhh yesssssssssssssssss please!!!  Whenever you get the time - would be much appreciated!   Thanks!   :-)

OK done
