Allen's Lollies ditch old favourites
A story published yesterday revealed that iconic lolly company Allen's will be ditching several of its classic lollies because they are no longer popular.
Memorable lollies such as Spearmint Leaves, Marella Jubes, Green Frogs, Oddfellow Mints, Sherbies, Butter Menthols Kids and Jelly Tots have been axed by the country’s largest lolly producer. In addition, more of the company's classic treats, such as bags of Violet Crumbles, have been downsized or changed.
A spokesperson from Allen's said, "We have streamlined the portfolio, deleting Spearmint Leaves and Green Frogs because they weren’t popular and sales had been slowing dropping off over time. We were selling one Green Frog to every 10 Red Frogs," he said.
Even though I hardly eat these lollies now, I did as a child, and the loss of Spearmint Leaves and bags of Violet Crumbles cuts me deeper than it should.
Have you ever felt nostalgic or sad when you found out a product you loved had been discontinued? Why do you think we can become so attached to something as frivolous as lollies?
