Looking for activities for the grandkids on these school holidays?

It's school holidays, and many grandparents will no doubt be taking on the role of minder for a spell. We thought it might be helpful to share some activities and school holiday deals that are happening at the moment. Maybe everyone has access to different offers and discounts and things to do. Why not share them with everyone?

Here's a website that promotes activities for kids over school holidays...

http://www.kidspot.com.au/SchoolHolidayZone/

Lots of Art and simple experiments to do in that link, thank you.

Planting something that they can grow and eat.

Weeding the garden and mowing the lawn.

Cooking meals and baking bread.

Washing their own clothes and drying them on a line outside.

Walking the dog and grooming the dogs.

Construction of a model aeroplane that flys.

Hunt for junk to build a billy cart.

I think that your suggestions (Mr or Mrs Mod ) are commercial rubbish.

Agree with you Davey, teaching children spending money on commercial things is not the only way to enjoy themselves.Great to teach when young to do and enjoy simple things . Teach them  that alone time is a good thing, this prepares and staves off the lonliness some feel when they are older.Get in tune with the environment.Don't let kids forget simple pleasures.Do the other things too but in moderation

Totally agree with you guys .... teach them young there are chores that can be fun.... if you want something else to do take them out for a family picnic in the nature .. but definitely avoid these commercialised places for fun.

We receive no 'kick backs' Davey. There is no commercial gain for these suggestions. That is all they are: suggestions. Your suggestions, by the way, are fantastic and we applaud you for them. Keep up the good work!

Love your ideas Davey, i too loathe teaching kids they can only be happy if oodles of entertainment is laid on for them, think back to our childhood where we had none of these things and we were fit and healthy and never bored, take the kids for a walk along a river bank ,let them pan for gold..they wont find any but lots of water splashing and paddling is fun., Organise a scavenger hunt in your street, have a sausage sizzle in the backyard and invite the kids in the street. play games of cricket in the backyard.Pitch a tent in the backyard and all pile in to sleep ,tell ghost stories then read the kids a story os have an old fashioned singing contest..just a few ideas..Peanuts

How about buying a microscope and a Magnifing lense and taking them for a bush walk, and gathering some stuff to examine.

These can then be used all the time

WA Museum always have fun things for children to do in the school holidays not only in Perth but in the Regional Town Museums too. Always worth looking up what is on there. Dress ups and Dino stomp dances for 0 to 4 year old look like a good bet for my 2 youngest grandchildren these holidays.

A lot of metro and regional galleries have kid's art classes and painting/drawing sessions. Many are free. Worth checking out.

Dont forget good old Bunnings, took my grandson and granddaughter

last year to some of the kids workshops, Loved it so much my grand daughter

learnt to make a tool box for me. A bit wonky but one of my prized

father's day gifts.

Melbourne grandparents head down to Scienceworks at Spotswood. Great interactive displays and currently an Alice in Wonderland exhibit (included in tkt price) and great dinosaur exhibit (you pay extra for this). If you have a seniors card you get in free.

I know it is a bit late for these holidays but when my granddaughters were younger I always looked to the local library first, they have great activities.  The local shopping centre often had things on too.  If it was a show I would take water and and nibbles so didn't need to but anything.

Check out buggy buddies on Facebook. Great site for places to go (free or not free), in WA.
