Shorten catches up with Abbott - both on the nose

The latest Fairfax-Ipsos poll shows that after a difficult fortnight for Mr Shorten and Mr Abbott, in which the opposition leader has faced questions about his time at the AWU and the prime minister has faced a divisive internal debate over same-sex marriage, both men's standing has plummeted.

It will also dampen speculation about an early election.

In addition to Labor's two-party preferred lead Mr Shorten is ahead of Mr Abbott as preferred prime minister, leading 43 per cent (up one point since June) to 39 per cent (down two points).

The dip has not translated into a drop in support for Labor, which has retained its six percentage point lead over the Coalition and, as in the June poll, leads 53 per cent to 47 per cent in the two-party preferred vote.

The Victorian branch of the AWU has moved to explain a $47,500 payment it received in 2007 that was described in its accounts as a "donation" made by mining company Roche.

According to accounts filed with Fair Work Australia, the payment was made to the union's Victorian branch by Roche Mining, a Queensland-based company owned by engineering group Downer EDI.

The payment does not appear in disclosures by the union to the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) that the union makes as an "associated entity" of the Australian Labor Party.

When first contacted about the payment earlier this week, the union provided no explanation. It now says the payment was from AWU members who worked at the company and was to cover legal costs associated with a dispute.

A spokeswoman said the members had made the payment "voluntarily". No explanation was provided for why the payment was attributed to the company in the accounts.

The donation was made the same year Bill Shorten ended his time as national secretary of the union.

The ABC has approached Downer for comment.

The year before the donation was made, a federal magistrate fined the union and four officials a total of $56,000 for an illegal meeting that led to a strike at a Roche Mining site in the Murray Basin in western Victoria.

The dip has not translated into a drop in support for Labor, which has retained its six percentage point lead over the Coalition and, as in the June poll, leads 53 per cent to 47 per cent in the two-party preferred vote.

Only because the greens support Labor ...

None of it matters the next election will be won in the western suburbs of Sydney . Which labor has just blown by its support of Himosexual marriage ..

Yes Himosexual marriage

Detest Abbott, detest Shorten, sort of looking somewhere in the direction of the Greens or Independents,  but overall thinking along the lines that from here on out might just boycott all elections,  given the sleazy, slimy, manipulative, power crazed, ego maniacal, narcissistic, do-anything-for-a-vote cesspit the world of politics is.....Made worse by the social media frenzy and the 24/7 news cycle  which in the main makes it hard to escape these prize wankers and wankeresses  - if there's such a word.....OVER IT!!!

I agree with you Shetso, the leaders and the parties of both sides are not worth a pinch of ---- I will vote for Independents -- depending on their preferences, I can not stand Abbott or ANY of his lot,  they are heartless and evil,  at least the Lab mob have empathy

Lab mob ... More empathy by taking away dentures and cataract removal ...

most of the recioients of those services happen to be SENIORS ?

Yeah I suppose if they cannot hear and eat they will die more quickly.

Shetso,

Yes I agree.

I have little or no inclination to support any of the current crop of politicians no matter what side of politics they come from.

I might just go fishing on the day.
