The problem is Australians do not want to farm and there are no laws prohibiting them from selling it to foreigners.

What a ridiculous thing to say Abby, farmers are being pushed off the land by banks, they are not given enough help, they have little or no choice but to sell, and, it's the government's responsibility not to sell off rural land. Bad move, very bad move

Plan B did watch Sunday Night, why aren't people protesting more about this?? Considering nearly 50 million hectares of agricultural land has some level of foreign ownership – that’s an area twice the size of Victoria. People will start to complain when it's too late and when all the best quality of all foodstuffs are sent to China to feed an increasing population especially now that they can have more than one child, and Australians are left with the rubbish. Bob Katter was not wrong when he said

"It’s not 'investing', they’re not opening mines or building dams or anything of that nature, they’re just buying the asset that is there. So it’s not investment, it’s selling your country off."

My word Ray Katter is very right but so many people I have spoken to say unless it is on main stream media they don't believe it ! Now quite a few have said --"Did you see Sunday night now I believe "  OMG I can not believe how darn blind these fools are,  I remember Abbott saying when asked, some time ago about o/s buyers buying our farms  he said

--"Well they can't take it out of the country"

Maybe they can't but they can take everything grown on it out and also use their own workers  -- ports and ships and  paying workers NOTHING

Trouble is most of the damage has been done, I find it very alarming when you see how many Chinese there are and what they have done to their own country and in so little time too

Some maybe but it looks to me that the foreigners are able to run the farms at a profit .... unfortunately as you say most of the profits go back to their homeland.

It is not only the farms that are being sold off it is also premium land along the coast like the development that is being planned for the Gold Coast ... china is taking over where Japan finished.

China have taken over A LOT of Africa and also Mauritius not many know of that, now moved into Aussie,

There is NO WAY we can buy land in their country, they will soon take over fully here and we will be working for them on their conditions

You read my mind!!  was just about to write something about the Africa situation, you beat me to it.Chinese investors,  bought farmland in 33 different countries abroad

These are the words of a Chinese migrant on an earlier Q & A talking about foreign ownership –

Natasha Nasrulla asked: I cant go to any Asian countries and buy land or property, however we are one of the few nations around Asia that let anyone come in and buy our land with no leases for private and commercial use. I realise the need for foreign investment but why are we selling ourselves down the proverbial river? I ask the question also because I’m concerned about my children’s future and I myself am a Chinese immigrant who has been living here for many years.

Yes Ray China and their population can take over the world in no time at all.

In China there are VERY RICH and VERY POOR, guess where we will be

There was the other big station taken over a couple of years ago, can't remember it's name, but it also gave them access to the Murray River with intensive irrigation system it will affect other agriculture further down the river.

We should at least do what NZ has in place only 49% of anything can be owned by foreigners. Selling off our food and water supplies is crazy.

Ray it makes me wonder if Abbott etc even knows about Africa etc --if he does or doesn't it makes him look even more of a fool, surely people can see where this is heading

Jane this is not just happening in the last 18 months ... this has been going on for many years.

It has been going on for years Abby but have you seen anything on main steam media ??

It was discussed on Q and A on Monday with Richard Marles of the labor party saying it was essential for Austrslia to receive foreign investment into our agriculture sector .

Greg Sheridan put the PMs point that we should not let Foreign State Owed Entities invest in our Agriculture .

I have recorded Q&A Pete but as yet I have not watched.

Can't say I agree with that though

Sadly I think it is about the Universal Government coming into operation.

Abby that would not surprise me one bit

Around the world farmers get government help in subsidies but here they are expected to live and make a profit. I believe they get some diesel rebate.

Supermarket chains screw them for lower prices all the time.

I can go to a nearby farm and buy potatoes at less than half the price in the stores and every one is a perfect spud.

In town diesel is $1.21 per litre but petrol is $1.45....thank god we have diesels.

"Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce has hit out at the Government's decision to give conditional approval for a huge open-cut coal mine near prime agricultural land on the Liverpool Plains in north-western New South Wales."

"In 2008, Chinese company Shenhua paid the former state Labor government $300 million for an exploration licence covering 20,000 hectares of the Gunnedah Basin coal field."

So it is not just the farms even our best agriculture areas are under threat.

My oath they are the whole or the Liverpool plans also and it is some of the very best land in Aussie

On the news last night: The Federal government has sold a massive area of the Liverpool Plains NSW to a Chinese company to mine coal. This is some of the most fertile farming land in the country and should be used for food production, not coal production. Wimpy Barnaby Joyce said he is very upset about it, tried to persuade the environment minister to preserve it as prime agricultural land but ultimately there was nothing he could do about it. He appears to have no power as leader of the Nationals.

A legal challenge is already underway into the project's approval by the NSW Planning Assessment Commission (PAC).

The NSW Environmental Defenders Office will argue on behalf of community group Upper Mooki Landcare that the PAC failed to assess whether the mine would place a viable local population of koalas at risk of extinction.

The matter will be heard in the Land and Environment Court in August.

I find this whole thing very frighting,

The Chinese do not care a hoot about ANYTHING but MONEY

Yes Joyce is weak as, and Greg Hunt weaker still they are both sickening and allowing this country to go to hell in a hand basket

Just unbelievable - short term gain and long term pain for Australia in losing its arable land and probably affecting water supplies.

Yes Vivity, it makes you wonder where their brains are IF they every had any!

If the mine goes ahead, it will clear 847 hectares of koala habitat.

It is estimated there are fewer than 1,000 animals in the area, which classifies them as vulnerable to extinction in New South Wales.

Lets hope the Land and Environment Court is more intelligent than our Politicians.
