"CHARLIE" - the Farmer. V. ANZ BANK UPDATE: 60 MINS. Chn. 9 !

Anyone watch 60 MINS. last night? What a utterly disgraceful and sad sad story...... (not just to "Charlie" -  but to hundreds of farmers throughout our magnificient country .........)

Charlie - 80 years old - property been thru 4-5 generations .....property in North Qld. - has Aboriginal paintings on the rocks throughout his property there.  When his farm got hit by drought - he tooK the initiative to start a small "Tourist Industry" - taking bus loads of tourists to see the Aborignal Art on his property.....he had to generate some kind of income ....... given he was at 'Mother Nature's" mercy!

He took out a 1.5 mill. loan with a small independent bank in his area and was cruising along reasonably well (making his monthly payments etc.)  - until - the ANZ Bank approached these smaller Regional Banks within the country and offered these indepedent banks mega monetry offers they could not refuse ...to "buy back" the loans they had given to the farmers!!!!!

Once ANZ secured the properties/loans from the small Regional Banks ...they then upped the interest rate dramatically and when farmer's struggled to pay - ANZ then started foreclosures on their properties!!!!!!  Argh!!!!! I was screaming at the TV at this point in time .........what total AH's!!!!

Charlie got into his battered 4-wd and drove from Nth. Qld. to Melb. to front the CEO here at the multi-storey "glitzy" ANZ building with the 60 mins. reporter!  At first - they didn't want to know him - but - he stood his ground (refused to leave the building!) and finally got to see the 2nd. in charge (under the CEO) and had an hour long meeting!

Outcome is yet to be heard in the Supreme Court ...BUT - ANZ have allowed him back onto his property (temporarily) and have offered $5000 legal costs towards "him" fighting "them" !  How BIG of them??? Considering they have top legal people and unlimited money!!!

There have been many stories like this lately in the media - each as "gutwrenching" as the other!!!

GO CHARLIE !!!  I for one will be watching the outcome!

THESE BANKS HAVE TO BE MADE ACCOUNTABLE FOR WHAT THEY DO TO PEOPLE'S LIVES  !!!!

...what an amazing 80 year old!  No one from the ANZ apparently even knew about the Aboriginal Artwork on his property - no one even bothered to go to his property - it was all "paperwork" from a swanky ANZ building here in Melbourne -  paperwork served by a total "stranger" who had no clue whatsoever!  Disgusting!!!

This is absolutely appalling, Foxy.

I would have thought that taking out a loan with the original bank would have been a contract ... Surely.

Even with a take-over by the ANZ, surely the original contract with set interest rates stands?

I don't understand this at all.

It is disgusting, but it's happening all over the country.  We will soon have no land owned by Australia.

There was another family being put off their property on Landline at the weekend.

Why should one bank be allowed to take over a loan taken out by someone with their own bank ?? It's time to stop these banks.

This has to stop but will our Government step in ??  Not Likely.

...there have been quite a few?  Was it the one where the Mother and the girls went back - pleading with the Sheriff's but were not allowed back onto the property?  The one where Bank Officials and the Sheriff turned up and changed the locks? That was heart-rending also.......apparently there are terrible statistics re farmer's/son's family members committing suicide because of these actions?  These farms have been in generations like "forever" ...... Deplorable!

Yes Foxy.

There have been a lot of stories on different channels.  I heard about the 80 year old on the news one night.

Yes I watched it and admire that bloke --good on him time we all stepped up and yelled and screamed and stopped this selling off of our country and crooked deals being done.

No Foxy not that one this one was 60 mins last Sunday night

Many people say that Australia is 'God's Own Country', if so why is it in such a god-awful mess.

Bankers are the greatest pack of lying, shifty, thieving, two-faced ratbags that ever drew breath, and a pox on society.

having been unwell lately,  i haven kept up with the news,  and missed this one FOXY,    it is shocking what banks are allowed to do,     they are giving loans to people who havent a chance in hell of paying them back,   and they know this,     but they screw people into the ground,  and dont care,     no one should be able to take on anothers debt,  unless they give the same terms as originally given,    as for farmers,   they have the highest suicide rate in the country,    and no wonder,   scenes of them ploughing there fruit and veg back into the ground,  because they cant sell it,   yet shelves are full of imported goods,    it is simply just not on,  but while this government allowes it,   iit will continue,    if only people realised this when buying,  and ONLY bought aust, grown,    i make a point of asking if something is not marked ,  point of origin,    even if we pay a little more,   who cares if we are saving farmers or any industry,  it is in out own interests in the long run,      a lot of farmers have gone into impossible debt and have no way out,    its a blight on this country,   and especialy the  government that this happens, BLOODY BANKS,     BLOODY GOVERNMENT,

Cats I agree and I never buy anything that is not Aussie sourced and it getting harder and harder every time I shop.

BTW I do hope you are feeeling better very soon,   I send you best wishes

thanks plan B,    coming good,   it is hard to find aussie made or grown,    DAVEY,    its not that people are not happy here,   i have a winge,   but im happy,   I am winging because i want this country to stay the great place it is,  and not go down the gurgler like so many others,     why are we almost FORCED to buy imported goods when we have ample goods here,    why do i have to buy oranges from california when farmers here cant compete with others prices and have to get rid of there own goods,    THE sight of farmers ploughing there crops into the ground is enough to make one weep,      and i have traveled quite a bit and seen other places,    not as much as id like to do,    but enough to say i know what im talking about,     WHAT produce do YOU BUY,     OVERSEES,   BECAUSE ITS CHEAPER,    OR DO YOU LOOK FOR, OR ASK,  FOR AUSTRALIA MADE AND OWNED,

Nobody twists your arm to stay in this God forsaken land. Anyone who is not happy here can migrate to another country only to find that the world is same all over.

How many of you whingers have seen the rest of the world?

I was born here Davey and it used to be safe and great --greed has taken over the world AND here but IMO this is still the best place, we just all need to stand up for our rights.

BTW Davey who was saying they were not happy here ?

If YOU think it is a God forsaken land maybe you should leave

We (The Public ) are losing our rights bit by bit everyday.

Governments and Banks can not be beaten because they make the rules and change them at will to suit themselves. The only way to hurt them is through the media........shaming and exposing shams and thefts.

The Media AND the Governments are run by Banks and BIG business Davey always have been, the media are told what to tell us, there is plenty out there to know if one chooses to look and it is more frighting than whats in the media

Promo's for tonights "60 Minutes"  are regarding Charlie Phillott ....and the outcome from the ANZ Bank!  He took on the bank and apparently won!!!  Can't wait to see how the bank fixed this injustice!!!

Just putting this up for anyone who may be interested!     :-)

Thank you for posting this Foxy, i saw the lead up to this where Charlie and the reporter went to talk to the Ceo.. i had not realised this was on tonight . so glad you have pointed it out i will definately be watching.

Thanks I did watch the last one forgot about this one

...  yes - I knew you and a few others were interested at the time .....good ole' Charlie huh?  Pity he had to do that at his age though - good on him!!! I hope they "wiped" any debt the poor bloke had???  Will be interesting to see the outcome!

Well how interesting was that report - ANZ paying him a "six figure" amount as compensation!!  No amount of monetry compensation can make up for living under that kind of stress on a daily basis for just over 5 years (and being evicted at one stage from your property to boot!!)

Noticed how the CEO of the ANZ managed to get around the question from Charles  Wooley at the end of the interview - when Charles asked "What about the other farmer's who are under the same predicament with the ANZ"?  Reply:  "Will be looked into....."

Bottom line:  I was really happy that - Charlie beat the Bank!!!  Impressive man!! :-)

I have recorded it but sounds like Charlie had a good out come GOOD FOR HIM standing up to the B%$#*&s

What a brilliant role model to the downtrodden  Charlie is but credit also needs to go to the TV station who helped with the power of publicity to bring the ANZ to accountability.  I think Charlie should be made Ausralian of the year.. he truly fits the image of the Aussie battlerof his generation.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention Foxy :)

Good outcome indeed thanks to the 60 minutes

.. hope that the other farmers will be as fortunate  and that ANZ is sincere with "Will be looked into....."

Yes!  Amazing what a bit of "bad publicity"  by 60 Mins. against such a large corporation can do!!   No doubt they helped tremendously by taking on Charlie's case ....  (Most people loathe the Big4 Banks anyway - thousands of people have been treated unfairly by all of them!!)

Pending this outcome (and after the first story by 60 mins...) there was a change.org petition against ANZ Bank (which I signed - along with about 880,000 other people at the time .....) so guess that might have made the ANZ take stock of what they were doing also....?  Who knows?

Yes I always say stand up for your rights -- there are more of US than there are of them and if we complian long anf loud enough they would have to do something

Exactly!  :-)
