Is banning booing at sporting events going too far?
AFL player Adam Goodes has been in the news quite a bit lately, due to his being constantly booed during AFL matches. The AFL is looking into how best to tackle what is being deemed as fan racism. Whilst racism cannot be condoned at sporting events, what if some people are booing him because they simply don't like him? What comes next? Will fans be gagged at all sporting events in case their cheers or boos offend someone? Is this going too far? Or do you think it is appropriate?
I have not read anywhere where booing is to be banned at sporting events. I have read that booing Adam Goodes is beyond what is the normal robust cheering and booing associated with footy. Goodes has a high profile in being Australian of the year which he did not seek but was nominated for. He does not sit well with some because he does not fit the mould of being an Uncle Tom script and speaks out for his culture. You do not win a Brownlow by being a dirty player you win it by being a consistent vote getter for being fairest and best. Crowds boo to put off a layer kicking at goal or because the player swapped clubs. To boo a player just for touching the ball ie just being on the ground is racist and has gone on too long. They boo because Goodes has the temerity to speak up and stand up for his culture. Its not a club thing or a footy norm but a racist action.
