Is banning booing at sporting events going too far?

AFL player Adam Goodes has been in the news quite a bit lately, due to his being constantly booed during AFL matches. The AFL is looking into how best to tackle what is being deemed as fan racism. Whilst racism cannot be condoned at sporting events, what if some people are booing him because they simply don't like him? What comes next? Will fans be gagged at all sporting events in case their cheers or boos offend someone? Is this going too far? Or do you think it is appropriate?

I have not read anywhere where booing is to be banned at sporting events. I have read that booing Adam Goodes is beyond what is the normal robust cheering and booing associated with footy. Goodes has a high profile in being Australian of the year which he did not seek but was nominated for. He does not sit well with some because he does not fit the mould of being an Uncle Tom script and speaks out for his culture. You do not win a Brownlow by being a dirty player you win it by being a consistent vote getter for being fairest and best. Crowds boo to put off a layer kicking at goal or because the player swapped clubs. To boo a player just for touching the ball ie just being on the ground is racist and has gone on too long. They boo because Goodes has the temerity to speak up and stand up for his culture. Its not a club thing or a footy norm but a racist action.

good reply geo - exactly my thoughts too so saves me saying any more

Booing at any game is part and parcel, it comes with the territory but to vilify people on account of race, sex etc should be absolutley banned. My feeling is Adam Goodes is getting more than his fair share of booing and does not deserve it.

Goodes is an Aboriginal who is coming into his own, he is being proud of who he is and to some still prejudiced Australians who still think that Aboriginals should know their place, clearly resent his popularity in some circles..

The Sydney Swans supporters do not boo Geddes Clubs like Hawthorn should look to their own supporters ..

North Melbourne said he would not be booed as their supporters had too much class .. Guess they were wrong ..

As a Cats member, i'll be at the game this weekend. I won't be booing Adam Goodes when he gets the ball, but i certainly won't be cheering him either like some are suggesting we do. I will treat Adam as if he was any other opposition player, as we all should. If he dives for a free kick, i'll have no issues in booing him on that occasion.

Fun Fact: back in the early 00's the Swans ran a 'Boo a Roo' campaign!

I rarely go to live sporting events these days and I never "boo" anyone - not my style. Its worth noting that there are 60 odd other aboriginal players in the AFL and NONE of them seem to be having this issue. Surely, that would be the case if we truly were a nation of racist bigots?I personally dont think its a racial problem, I think that there are just a lot of people who dont like Goodes.

We are all entitled to our opinion and mine is that Goodes likes to "play the victim" and makes any insult or jibe into a racist slur.

I agree with KFC I think Adams spear throwing at the crowd is provocative

Dear Adam Goodes,

We don't boo you because you are Aboriginal, we boo you because you are a wanker.

                    Regards,

The Crowd

Speak for yourself Davey.

I agree with Geomac (29/7 at 1.35pm).

Think you are quite right Kfc

The crowd is booing because for whatever reason they do not like Goodes as a person... maybe a tall poppy syndrome type of thing ?

Were it racist, then the crowd would boo at all the Aboriginal players and that is NOT the case.

I agree with Geoge Kekovich's comments.
