Cyber-bullies in NZ could see two years jail time

New Zealand recently passed a law that could see cyber-bullies face up to two years jail time. And the if bullying leads to suicide, the offenders will see up to three years in jail.

According to tech website engadget: "The legislation effectively prohibits sending messages to people that are racist, sexist, critical of their religion, sexuality or disability. The rest for determining harm will be if these communications were designed to cause "serious emotional distress'".

There will no doubt be some teething problems, especially about what is considered abuse or hate speech, and there are concerns that the wording of the law is open-ended, which could see children criminalised unecessarily.

What do you think of such a law?

My goodness if they introduce such a law here our courts will be overwhelmed! But I do agree that something has to be done about cyber bullying. I truly worry for my grandchildren that they may face bullying in the future when they are old enough to get a Facebook account. Teens are particularly vulnerable and do need to be protected.

To the Moderator: Excellent thread and I am wondering why you have not had a huge response....have you touched on a sensitive nerve?

I am in total agreement with this law...bullying in any form must be nipped in the bud...it is also important for this rule to be enforced on a forum such as this. Name calling... the spreading of rumours...pointing out that people may be suffering from illnesses...do not make for a pleasant forum.

I am very happy to see you doing such a good job and hope it will continue.

Forgot to add Moderator... cyber bullying also affects people's health...therefore might be a good idea to put it up also in Health & Well Being?

MOD: in view of what I just saw in the Let's Chat thread and the nature of this thread, you might like to have a read of this:

"Cyberbullying is not confined to English-speaking countries and we are seeing nations all over the world implement changes to address the issue.

UNICEF, the Human Rights Commission and the United Nations are calling for a coordinated approach from governments around the world.

Recommendations from the 2009 Unlearning Intolerance Seminar, held in the United Nations Headquarters in New York, call for international strategies on awareness, education, family involvement and policy change in dealing with “cyber-hate”.
