Racehorse trainer Bart Cummings dies aged 87

Horse racing lost a legend this morning with the death of 87-year-old trainer Bart Cummings.

Despite having asthma and being told to stay away from horses, Bart dedicated his life to training horses, winning the prestigious Melbourne Cup 12 times.

The statement from his grandson and training partner, James, says it all

"James Bartholomew Cummings OAM, passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of this morning, Sunday the 30th of August 2015, in his homestead at Princes Farm, Castlereagh," James Cummings said in a statement.

"His final moments were spent with his family and wife of 61 years, Valmae, with whom he celebrated their anniversary on Friday.

"For Bart, aged 87, this was a fitting end. A husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather; a master trainer and a larger than life figure.

"We will miss you."

Yes I agree, Bart Cummings is an inspiration to people, like many other Australians who suffer crippling diseases, but stll rise above it, he deserves respect.

RIP Bart there will only be one Cups Kings winner of your calibre.

"Racehorses are the victims of a multi-billion dollar industry that is rife

with drug abuse, injuries, race fixing, and many horses end their

careers at the slaughterhouse"

(Ref:  PETA - Protection for the Ethical Treatment of Animals)...

Not like it was in your day Abby, the sport of kings has been cleaned up!

Regardless of what personal views one may have , At least show a little respect for a post that honours a Great Australian on his demise.....What is happening to the world...? R.I.P. Bart Cummings .

The horses weigh more than 1,000 pounds, are supported by ankles the size of a human’s, and are whipped and forced to run around tracks that are often made of hard-packed dirt at speeds of more than 30 miles per hour while carrying people on their backs.

Horses are used like disposable commodities

..... Shame on humans who support this cruelty

(Ref:  PETA - Protection for the Ethical Treatment of Animals)...

So...do we stop dressage horses...do we stop cross country horse racing? I think not!

My thoughts exactly Cranky.

Horses were born to run & do the wonderful things they do.Your welcome to your opinion Abby but I agree with Cranky

RIP Bart.

I would love to see Precedence win the Melbourne cup and would

think many, just for sentimental reasons would place a small wager.

Expecting a lot of a 10 year old BUT with Bart's guidance from above anything could be possible.

What is the reason Bart is getting a "state funeral". Politicians and Sportsman seem the only one's that get them. They have the money and we pay. Besides Melbourne Cups what has he done, is it a lot of charity work, worked with disable kids, started a home for sick horses, etc.  WHAT?

Is he definitely getting a State Funeral?  Has it been set in "concrete"??? I was almost sick when I heard that may happen yesterday??  - What a damn joke!!!  The man was a horse trainer for heavens sakes!  Was he a top heart surgeon - find a cure for cancer - save lives - etc. (plus all your "reasons"  above Phantom)???  ....... Ridiculous over-the-top public outcry yet again of nothng but emotional stupidity!

Also all the crazy and soppy R.I.P.'s from people who didn't even know the man? What a farce!  Unbelievable!  lol

And who are you to say who knew Bart or not?.. being respectful costs nothing...and every person on earth deserves to go to their resting place in peace...no matter who they are or what they do..Aren't you a bitter Fox.

Good on you Cranks, people who say these things get up my nose.

These are for you to share with Black Duck and Peanuts at the next book club get together

Phamtom,

Agree with you and can't make much sense of someone like  Bart Cummings being given a State Funeral - and quietly wondering why his family would not be required to pay for his funeral like the rest of us of peasants...

None are being disrepectful.

I am sure whatever Bart Cummins contributed to racing he was well rewarded.

Why, indeed, a state funeral?

Racing has had a long history in Australia, I doubt if the Melbourne Cup Carnival and the tourist dollar was a result of Cummings' contributions.  Indeed, whether Cummings was involved with racing or not.

phantom and Foxy,

Thank you for a sense of proportion.

A life crippling disease ...?  Many suffer from crippling disease and live productive lives.

Yes, he did a good job, for which he was well rewarded.  He lived a successful and long life.  None begrudge him that.  And it is a case of RIP.

However, he wasn't a Fred Hollows.  Now that was a man who deserved plaudits and accolades.  We really need a sense of perspective.

Why Thankyou Ray...I will take my chockies to bed and of course save some for the ladies in the library...

Now I lay me down to sleep.

I pray the lord my soul to keep,

and if I die before I wake..................

Please dont let this lot know or I will be critisized before my body is cold...!!!

Hehehehe Cranks you make me laugh, glad you enjoyed the chockies. Who could ever say a bad word about you?

Ray, Where on earth have you been this past week, snoozing on the desk...??. The residents went on a rampage..but that's not a problem, whilst they were sticking barbs in me they were leaving some other poor bugger alone....but I have a confession to make...I ate all but two in the box...I just got carried away....No, No, No...Its ok..I'm not dead yet...just bloated!...  LOLOL

I' m sure Bart had a great connection with the Catholic Church, I read once, he used to have a Priest come over to the stables and bless all the horses before they raced. I'm sure he contributed a lot to the Church., maybe that is why they are having a State Funeral for him in St. Mary's Cathederal.

He also donated 20% of his winnings to children's oncology. Good bloke. He will be missed in the racing world.

phantom

Melbourne Cup Carnival added $195 million to that state's economy in tourism revenue last year, and that doesn't even include the other races.

That's why if he is gets a state funeral,I won't be complaining.

Melbourne is in Victoria

So what's your point? Everyone knows that.

Australia may never see another trainer like Bart Cummings, 12 Melbourne Cup wins. RIP Bart
