Govt bill is an attack on aussie jobs

Labor, the unions and other Australian shipping companies have expressed their concern at the legislation, which is now before the Senate standing committee on rural, regional affairs and transport. The committee is due to report on the bill in October.

The ongtime Liberal party member Peter Cadwallader, of the Intercontinental Shipping Group, which operates bulk carrier ICS Silver Lining, said in his own submission that jobs and tax revenue would be lost to Australia as a result of the legislation.

“As a longtime member of the Liberal party (nearly 50 years), I am aware that the focus of Coalition policy is jobs and growth,” he said. “Both of these objectives will be sacrificed by this bill in direct contradiction of Coalition policy.”

" A cruise operator has alleged a government bureaucrat advised it to sack its Australian staff and hire foreign crew on cheaper wages to remain competitive under the Coalition’s proposed new shipping laws. "

One has to ask who the govt represents, foreign workers or Australian workers ? This bill is just another attack on Australian jobs and comditions from people who defend their travel rorts as part of the job. The same govt that creates a muscled up border force ( farce ) wants to pass a bill that will mean even more foreign workers plying our domestic shipping routes. They killed of the car industry and decided that SPC was not worth helping yet found bucks for Cadbury because a staffer was also a lobbyist for the chocolate maker. Howard flogged off the ANL and now Abbott wants foreign crews on any shipping thats left. His half a million a year wage has to be the biggest waste of money from the taxpayer ever. Pay a person to destroy aussie jobs.

So the blame game continues with Abbott showing he has no respect for Australian workers.

As I have said continuously, the Liberal Party have NO policies only, mega corp wish lists which have not been examined for their current or future effect on Australia's economy nor the wellbeing of Australia or Australians.

They have run this country to the ground and tripled our DEBT which due to the pending collapse of financial markets and institutions which is starting to crack open and will be right there with us in 2016, will be important, when it wasn't so much before.  Especially, when our GDP and other key financial and international measurements are also going down at a very frightening speed.

The Libs have done NO homework, undertaken NO studies, NOR consulted with non-partisan experts in the field.

They have JUST implimented mega corp wish lists (which included selling off Australian ASSETS to (mainly) foreign big boys) and run around trying to discredit unions and to shut up corporate and other media from reporting facts - instead of promoting Liberal MANTRA.  That's their sole effort for the past 2 years.

We (Australia) are no longer in a position to remain steady when other nations are flailing, due to the abysmal management of this country AND the fact that no SHORT, MEDIUM or LONG TERM PLANS have even been considered.. let alone ready to put in place to stop this country from free falling into recession and bad times.

Abbott is without doubt the most embarrassing, most incompetent and the absolute WORST leader, this country has ever seen.

.... thanks to NewsCorp and other Foreign interests for giving us this untenable moron for a PM.

More than nine in 10 domestic seafarers will lose their jobs if the Abbott government's plan to relax shipping regulations passes Parliament, research suggests.

Less than 100 seafarers would remain in employment out of a current workforce of 1177, according to a report written by the Australia Institute, based on government documents supporting its Shipping Legislation Amendment Bill.

The dire forecast comes as a major Bass Strait freight company, SeaRoad, warned it will reconsider a $100 million investment in two new cargo vessels if the government pushes ahead and dumps rules that force foreign vessels to pay their crew Australian wages while working domestic routes.

" Canada, the US, Brazil and India all have laws that ensure local shipping crews are favoured over foreign crews. The US insists that all ships working between American ports are even built in the US. "

The only australian job Abbott is interested in preserving is his own.

What a crazy argument . The taxpayers in Australia are about 10 million . How much of their wages are you asking them to give up to support jobs

if the Shipping industry is so great why did Keating /Wran sell ANL ..

We have just got our of supporting Multi/ National car companies where our support for old technology cars costs us 40,000 dollars per worker..

if you want to create jobs , you need to understand that 85 per cent of jobs are in the service industry , these are the beneficiaries. Of FTA..

America, because it was the world currency and could pass on any costs associated with its mismanagement of its economy, to the rest of the world, abandoned most of its manufacturing and concentrated on the financial industry.

This has been disasterous for America as financial houses (PRIVATE ultra powerful banks, PRIVATE financial Investment institutions and their PRIVATE Reserve Bank), have become that powerful, that they have interfered with the democratic processes in that country and ensured that policies were made that simply enhanced THEIR pockets with little regard to the economy.

The thought at the time was that if it was good for the ultra wealthy and their corporate vehicles, then it was good for the economy..... but that isn't what is happening today.  The greed of these ultra wealthy has caused many Americans to be living in near third world conditions, unemployment to be well over double Australias whole population, growing slums & poverty, drugs and violent crime completely out of control, and the general economy falling apart.

They do NOT produce anything.... CHINA does it all, which is why CHINA will survive the next GFC and the USA will take a nose dive.  It has already started, unless the USA can pull a rabbit out of the hat, that is.  They have done incredible things since the beginning of the GFC to stay in power, filthy wars in the Middle East and the total support, funding, arming and training of terrorist groups, including the usurping of a democratically elected govt in Ukraine by a group of fascists that could not get elected in their own right prior to the coup.  All this blood and carnage, to ensure alliances (EU away from Russia and back towards tying up strongly with the USA.... to the EU's detriment, by the way.... although it has not been finalised as the EU is holding back because of the people) and instability which favours the USA.

My point is, PRODUCTION is essential to the wellbeing of a country's economy.  It doesn't have to be heavy manufacturing it could be innovations and forward thinking in science, medicine, IT, etc.  That is why Australia's future depended upon, Labor's NBN, to put it ahead of the world and give us a chance to claim industry niches.  We were once ahead of the world with Alternative Energy and had invested a lot of money into research and scientific undertakings (after that was thrown out by Abbott and the rest of the world grabbed it with both hands and have run with it, we are now way behind the eight ball).

Having a service industry is just NOT going to cut it, a country has to have REAL productive industries to make it successful.

The advancing rate of container ships themselves in size and handling abilities also saw this concern as a major player, with overseas destinations added to the trade routes.
ANL Ltd., as it became in 1989, was dismantled by the Australian Government in 1998 with the name rights and overseas vessels being acquired by what is now
CMA CGM Holdings.
The name is still in use by this group as the subsidiaries ANL Container Line Pty. Ltd and ANL Singapore Pty. Ltd. using chartered tonnage which still bear the ANL funnel colours

No longer Australian owned except for the agency side of operations where perhaps 300 staff are employed
Ironically, perhaps more than co-incidental, the deliberate dismantling of a shipping line the Australian Government created has seen once again, the Prime Minister responsible lose his own seat for the second time in Australian history. Where Stanley Melbourne Bruce dismantled, and sold off the ACL Australian Commonwealth Line of Steamers, since, John Howard was removed from his seat in 2007
Some learn from history, others become history where at times, history repeats itself
