Dark-skinned doll stuns viewers on the NRL field

Captain Johnathan Thurston was captured sharing a heart-warming moment with his young daughter after the North Queensland Cowboys made its maiden National Rugby League premiership win this weekend. The father-daughter photo touched the hearts of viewers and social media users, but it was Frankie's dark-skinned doll that has held the most interest. Australian sport has been marred by racism against indigenous players (Thurston himself is an indigenous Australian) and many are praising Thurston for promoting diversity to his daughter. The photo is being identified as the strongest image from the tournament, above all others. What do yo think?

lol - does anyone really care to be honest?? Was it a "publicity" stunt??    I had a Black china doll as a child ....dressed in a hot pink sik dress - the doll had big gold hoop earrings...... I called her "Mary Jane" ...... also had a lot of "White" dolls and bears and stuffed animals etc.

Brought back a lot of memories seeing the pic. of that doll....can't recall seeing any around for years and years?  Golliwogs "disappeared" off the shelves too - ages ago - all part of the "politically correct police".  Pathetic!!

I collected a range of Golliwog stickers (as a child) that were put under the lids of Golden Shred Marmalade/Jams in the early 50's ....imagine that happening now!  lol lol

A truly heart-warming photograph of a man and his lovely little daughter.

But ... why the "shock/horror" of the doll.   PC police have completely lost the plot.  Don't they see that by objecting to the doll, they are utterly racist themselves.

As a child, I loved the "Epandemonious" (spelling?) stories about a little black boy and his mother.   I particularly loved the mother, as she so distinctly different from mine.

I also had a black doll as a child.

Why would people be be STUNNED ??????????????

In view that last August an eBay seller  was banned from trying to sell a golliwog badge on eBay because it was racist ... I can see why people would be stunned ... seems it is only considered as racist if white people have a black doll.

Seems they protest too much which means they -- the whites -- are the ones that are racist

How would a 2cm badge be racist and dicsriminatory ?

Think eBay has lost the plot.

OMG they sure have lost the plot!

lol - amazing - so - tell me -  are "black kids" not allowed to have "white dolls" and are descriminated against?  Ridiculous!!!! Kids have no idea about racism - all comes from the parents!

What about "Black Bears"??? There are heaps of "black" teddies in gift shops????

Are "Black Bears" next in line to be banned???  What's the difference between a Black Bear and a Black Doll????  The world has gone mad!!!!!

Yes the world has gone bloody mad!

My friend advertised and sold her golliwog doll on Gumtree and got $40 for it...she was robbed lol.

A lady collector sent her boyfriend 75 kms to collect it.   Apparently she has quite a collection.

I think it is a nice family photo.

Yes Gerry it is a nice photo

What's really sad about all this, is why the media think it so unusual that a big thing has to be made about it. Why is it unusual for a child of any colour to have a doll of any colour?

Our kids had dolls and friends from all over the world.

I agree it is a beautiful photo and I think it would be ideal if all kids had dolls with various skin colours. I also think dolls should have genitals to denote male or female. Why do we hide genitals as though they are naughty parts of us?

Oops, I just realised how that sounds. I meant "Why do we hide genitals on dolls...."

i had a huge black doll,   it was a real 'mama 'doll,    with a scarf on its head,   tied at the top like you see the old black mamas of the south,    never thought anything of it,       one of my parents best friends was a man ,    black as coal,      as kids we called him uncle sam,    he was a lovely man,     married to a white lady,    winnie,   who worked fr my parents,      if kids were alone,   they would never know any difference,     wouldnt matter,    a shop at south melbourne market has just started selling golliwogs again,     they were of the market for years,    ridiculus,

...they are selling Golliwogs at the South Melbourne Market??  Wow! - they won't be for long once all the "politically-correct busy-body do-gooders" get "wind" of it!  lol .......

I'm finding it interesting that many of us had black dolls as kids....wonder why? I mean I never had any Chinese dolls etc.  ?  (that's if there were any?)   :-)

A beautiful picture of a lovely little girl and her proud father, why any report or noting about the skin tone of her doll is beyond belief. As Foxy  stated  kids are not judgemental pathetic that anyone was so biased that a doll took precedence or was even commented on over the achievement of the father as Captain of a successful team.

Maybe the author was a supporter of some other football team and tried to detract from North Queensland Cowboys

All media hype.

I thought this was a lovely picture and I did not even see the doll until it was mentioned. If it was meant to send a messge ,which I doubt , it certainly was a much better message that you know who's in your face dance

As a child I loved my golli's and dolls of any colour,,I sill have a boy doll I call Adam who has all the things a boy doll should have

foxy the gollys at the market are nice,    go from very small ones to about 18ch tall,   i bought one for BRAXTON when he was born,    my daughter had a big black china one when small,    dont know whatever happened to it,   probably lost when we moved to melbourne,     she was never a doll person anyway,

My dolls were neuter gender and did not have sex organs either male or female variety ??

... maybe it was because they were home made ???
