Peter Garrett

After watching him speaking about this on TV last night where he categorically said he was offered a wad of money in an envelope;  I find it astonishing that he now wants to retract all he said.

I wonder who came knocking on his door??

"Former Labor minister Peter Garrett has revealed he was offered 'hundreds, if not thousands of dollars' by Clubs New South Wales, the peak licensed clubs body that has been heavily involved in lobbying against poker machine restrictions over more than a decade.

Mr Garrett says he was handed an envelope filled with money at a function shortly after being elected in 2004. The revelation was to be included in his autobiography and a new documentary about gambling in Australia, but Peter Garrett no longer wants the allegation going to air."

I reckon he is now denying it becaus he could be punished for not declaring it earlier. I believe his earlier version that he was offered cash but we may never know for sure.

I think you may be right Gerry. I doubt very much that he made it up, why would he?

He handed the envelope back...did not keep it so he did nothing wrong.

He should have taken a photo of it before he did so he had the proof.  It would appear to me the heavies have come down on him as the Clubs NSW have denied it happened.

Someone is lying.

RE: Someone is lying.

..... my money is on the Politician :)

nah, surely not Abby....they are called Honourable! ;)

I didn't think he was lieing the first time, but he sure as hell was last night

Agree, Taddy.   He's too scared to tell the truth now.

I am more interested in what pressure has come to bear that has caused him to change his story. Who is applying that pressue and why.

It will be an interesting developement.  From a vague memory, he has committed a criminal offence by not reporting the offer of the bribe.

Criminal offences dont seem to count for Politicians innes, for some strange reason.

Good on Mr Wilkie for that.

Yes Gerry, it warrants looking into.  Especially if you read the news item.

I thought only old people had memory loss, it seems not.

Well he may have given the envelope back after emptying it LOL

Thanks for the link Sandi

Usually politicians say "I do not recall"!
