Ashbygate- Mal Brough a crim ?

In his finding against Ashby's original complaint, the Federal Court judge, Justice Steven Rares, described the case as an abuse of political process. Rares pointed the finger squarely at Brough, concluding that Ashby and fellow staff member Karen Doane had worked with Brough "to cause Mr Slipper as much political and public damage as they could inflict on him".

Brough also admitted in a media interview that he'd asked Ashby to make copies of the then speaker's diary, apparently to prove Slipper's suspected abuse of travel allowances.

It has been a point of considerable speculation since then how Brough's actions avoided any further political or legal scrutiny. After securing preselection for Fisher, he was elected in 2013, but was not returned to the ministry until Turnbull became leader in 2015.

Curiously, out of all the portfolios options available to him, Turnbull made the former assistant treasurer and families and community services minister, his new Special Minister of State. That is, the minister responsible for parliamentarians' entitlements.

Seems curious that the AFP takes so long to do anything even when. I wonder it Brough,Pyne and Roy are worried ?

If this man has done the wrong thing I hope the full weight of the law comes down on him and he is forced to resign from Parliament and also the Liberal Party.

If others are found to be guilty they should as well.

Fair comment Radish but things like this have a way of not much happening. Greche comes to mind.

I dont know why Brough got so involved with Ashby's predicament? It was never going to be a good political move. That last Labor term was a shambles with both sides of the house focussing more on politics rather than fiscal policy.

Brough and good judgement do not seem to mix well. He had an electorate type office down the street from Slipper paid for by who knows but bet it was not Mal. Slipper had bugger all chance of re-election and Brough and crew go dark ops. Minister for State ? Reward for votes or Mal knows where the bodies are because its not for good judgement.

Mal Brough is under renewed pressure to explain his role in the torrid Peter Slipper affair, with Labor escalating its attack and Clive Palmer reviving sensational claims the Special Minister of State asked him to fund a $200,000 legal case to "destroy" his political rival.

Mr Palmer was a long-time member of and major political donor to the Liberal National Party before he quit in protest and formed the Palmer United Party.

Under parliamentary privilege, Mr Palmer told the House of Representatives on Wednesday that Mr Brough asked him in April 2012 to fund Mr Ashby's legal case, which he said to he understood to be worth around $200,000.

"In relation to the 60 Minutes interview, what was put to air was not the full question," Mr Brough told the House of Representatives.

But the Nine Network released the video-taped interview, which showed Mr Brough's claim that 60 Minutes had withheld part of the question to be false.

Shadow Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus, who led the parliamentary attack, said after viewing the footage: "I don't see how this minister can keep his job after that. It is very clear what he said. It's a clear answer to a clear question and this was not edited as the minister suggested today."

60 Minutes released a transcript of the interview on Tuesday afternoon in which Mr Brough was asked, "Did you ask James Ashby to procure, um, copies of Peter Slipper's diary for you?"

"Yes I did," he replies.

There seems to be a conflict betweeen the statements of Mal Brough and that of Mr Ashby.

Mal Brough when asked "did you ask James Ashby to procure copies of Peter Slipper's diary for for you?" Mr Brough replied "Yes I did,"

According to a report on the ABC
Yesterday, Mr Ashby told Macquarie Radio that Mr Brough "never, never, ever, ever" asked him for copies of the diaries of Mr Slipper.
Mr Ashby now maintains he went to Mr Brough with copies of the diaries.
"I don't know exactly how that 60 Minutes interview was cut, but obviously it didn't look good for Mal Brough," he said.
"But I can assure you that never at any point did Mal Brough ask me for copies of those diaries."
Mr Ashby also gave an interview to 60 Minutes last year, where he appeared to accept the proposition that Mr Brough asked for the diaries.

I reckon that one of them is a bit careless with the truth
