How sacred is the space in your wheelie bin?

Is the space in a wheelie bin fair game once it’s been placed on the nature strip for collection? Apparently not if you live in Brimbank Council in Victoria.

In 2015, a total of 79 complaints regarding sneaky bin fillers were lodged with the council, however, a number of these were due to rubbish being put in the wrong bin. On one occasion a resident rifled through a bag of rubbish erroneously placed in a green garden bin, to see if he could identify the culprit.

Now, I will admit that I am a big wheelie bin space thief. Thankfully, my neighbours are always quite sharp at putting their bins out for collection and I have been known to borrow space in both the normal rubbish bin and the recyclable. However, I always make sure that I’m putting the correct rubbish in the right type of bin, and do so safely. I may be a ‘thief’ but I’m a considerate one.

How do you feel about the space in your rubbish bin? Has your bin been contaminated by the wrong type of rubbish?

Seems a small issue but when analysed it is more complicated :)

I would be upset if my bin was filled with the wrong things, or unwrapped house garbage, as I keep a neat bin lol.

Quite o.k. by me though, if anyone asks and shows me what they want to put in our bin, as if I have room, no worries.

I feel similar to you Phyl, if asked I would certainly appreciate that more than some one just coming to the bin and throwing their stuff in... further to the household bins those big skip bins are a magnet for larger items people want to get rid of, our daughter lives in an inner suburb  and had some renovations done last year, the contractor doing the renovations ordered a big skip bin for the unwanted and discarded items but they found people were filling it up with their stuff that was too big for the household bins.... contractors pay hundreds of dollars for the use of those bins...

I wouldn't know if anyone put rubbish in my wheellie bin as we can't see ours from the road, too far away...  My thoughts are that it's pretty rude of people just popping stuff in someone elses bin with out asking, but that's just me, old school I guess......

I have always thought Debbie that in most states once you put your bin on the nature strip, you are more than fair game. I don't think there are any laws that say people can't put stuff in your bin. Obviously if one has a photo of someone putting the wrong stuff in the wrong bin, maybe they can get into trouble. We are very protective of our wheelie bins and never put them out at night so far so good. Anyway we have great people living in our street who will always ask. Once a neighbour borrowed my green bin, when he returned it had been washed and cleaned. That's what I call great manners.

Yes, I think it is very rude to use a neighbour's bin without asking and always if it's the green waste wash it out before I return it.  Very rarely have to ask as we have a compo heap so we re-cycle whatever we can.

These days our Council takes up to a fair size tree limb(cut down to manageable pieces)  and meat bones as they sell the green waste to a company that makes compost for sale.  So we put those things in and onion skins,orange/lemon  skins as worms don't like those.

always ask ...common courtesy.

I live in a block of 6 Villas. We each have a Yellow bin for recycling and a Green bin for household rubbish. I even wrote in Texta what the Yellow Bins hold. Do you think anyone takes notice of what these bins are for? No, they are all renters except for two of us and don't give a damn what they put in the bins. The Council puts stickers on the ones that have wrong garbage and they sit on the street for days. They don't know what common courtesy means.

I would be finding out when the garbos were coming around and would put my bin out as late as possible.

Looks like I'll have to be up at the crack of dawn, sunrise that is, Radish.

I have told neighbours with young children and lots Of rubbish  that they are welcome to put rubbish in my bin if there is enough space and they have too much to fit in their bin. another neighbour who did so without asking everyone as he only paid for a small bin was told by everyone to get a big bin.

My son in Sydney had a problem as did others in his street of someone overfilling his/their Bin after dark and the garbos refusing to empty overfilled bins, everyone reported the same person and they were told to pay for an extra  bin and stop using others by the council.

Pretty rude to use someone else's bin without asking.

.... lol lol - my neighbour's across the road - use my "food"  bin for their extra rubbish!  They have never asked.....only reason I know is - after I put it out on the street the night prior - if I want to add anything early morning - it is full of their rubbish!   Xmas time is a "doosey" lol ......... it used to bother me a bit - but hey - there are so many other worse things going on in the world -  I don't care anymore!  Over it!    :-)

I know it's them because of the large native/bush blocks here and there is no-one else around!

Raddy you can never trust the "garbo's" here regarding what time they will arrive! Can be 6.30am (when you don't put it out) or 11.30 am or 1.30pm - lol .... Murphy's Law!   lol lol lol

We are pretty lucky Foxy....they seem to come at the same time....around 7 a.m.

Viv, I do not mind if anyone uses our bin (never have done so far as it is always full anyway) BUT just ask and if sloppy mess put it in a proper plastic bag and tie it up.  Our bin is always kept clean as hubby puts everything inside large plastic garbage bags and tied up tight.

We had some visitors in the back lane the other week put the left overs from cleaning fish in mine --boy did it stink -- when I confronted them about it they said they never had fish --however I saw them unloading their boat with caught fish-- took me a few days to get rid of the smell.

Why do people have to LIE why not just admit to doing the wrong thing.

One day someone threw half used paint cans into my bin and all the paint ran down the sides of it. The council sent me a letter saying that it is my responsibility to keep the bins in good order. I rang the council and said it was not my paint cans as someone had come by late at night and thrown them in. I never heard anything more.
