Medicare is not being privatised: Sussan Ley
Further to Amelia’s news piece, Government may privatise Medicare, Health Minister Sussan Ley has told Sky News that the Government is not looking to privatise Medicare, but rather, it’s only looking at outsourcing the benefits payment systems.
'This is the part of Medicare that you don't see, that happens behind the scenes...The system is clunky,' said Ms Ley.
Ms Ley wants to spend less on bureaucratic systems and more on patients, as the government looks to take the health and aged-care payment system into the 21st century.
Regardless, Labor seems opposed to privatising Medicare and hopes that the Government is not trying to sell Medicare by stealth. But as far as updating the payments system: “we're up for that, a privatisation or a part-privatisation of Medicare is an entirely different question again”.
So, if the Government is looking at outsourcing the payments system to overseas companies, why wouldn’t they fund an upgrade to existing payment systems and keep the money – and jobs – in Australia? Surely it’s an investment worth considering?
