Medicare is not being privatised: Sussan Ley

Further to Amelia’s news piece, Government may privatise Medicare, Health Minister Sussan Ley has told Sky News that the Government is not looking to privatise Medicare, but rather, it’s only looking at outsourcing the benefits payment systems.

'This is the part of Medicare that you don't see, that happens behind the scenes...The system is clunky,' said Ms Ley.

Ms Ley wants to spend less on bureaucratic systems and more on patients, as the government looks to take the health and aged-care payment system into the 21st century.

Regardless, Labor seems opposed to privatising Medicare and hopes that the Government is not trying to sell Medicare by stealth. But as far as updating the payments system: “we're up for that, a privatisation or a part-privatisation of Medicare is an entirely different question again”.

So, if the Government is looking at outsourcing the payments system to overseas companies, why wouldn’t they fund an upgrade to existing payment systems and keep the money – and jobs – in Australia? Surely it’s an investment worth considering?

What do you think of this?

Essential polling

So this would be yet another that has people that can not even speak good English and we need to have our health system in good hands -- not some 3rd world place which I am sure it would be.

Defend Our Medicare

The Turnbull government has plans to privatise $50 billion in Medicare payment services. This would see for-profit corporations calling the shots on who receives publicly funded care and accessing our private medical data.

I think this is the first step towards full privatisation of Medicare despite the assurances we are getting.

At the moment the system is extremely inefficient...ancient by todays technological standards.

Although I would rather not see it privatised something has to be done to bring it up to scratch.. and.. if we can have guarantees there would be no change to actual scheduled fees...health funding and so on..it might be a good thing.

I would rather see a highly efficient system rather than the present one any time.

Well said Thea, agree fully with your comments.

This process is merely that of filling up the pockets of foreign megacorps who, with control of our govts administrative functions, will have even more power over our governments and our democratic process.

LOGICAL and straightfard:

1. govt administers their own service = NIL profit requirements; Australians employed; money circulated IN Australia; small and medium and even large Australian businesses benefit; and employment and economy thrive.

2. govt hands over to foreign megacorps to administer = extra payment for these corporations to make PROFITS; shifting employment from Australians to foreign workers (either on their own soil or via 457 visas); profits and wages going overseas; less money circulating in Australia; less money spent at small, medium and large Australian businesses with business failures, also comes even less employment and even less money circulating; followed by Australia's economy going even FURTHER down the tube.

So, all I can say is that the LIBERAL PARTY is totally STUFFED, to even suggest this FOREIGN MEGACORP wishlist style policy????

Also totally corrupt  and selling off our country more and more day by day,  how can ANYONE think by selling out our country to foreign ownership this can  be a good move in ANY way?Do they really think it will be OUR people employed and that we will have any say on where the  product is sold!?

No business entity would take it on unless there was a profit for them and as Medicare is underfunded and understaffed at present it stands to reason the end user will be charged more to make it profitable business.

Why outsource to overseas companies ? There is not enough information being supplied and when stealth is operating then we should be worried.

About time we had open government where the population was kept informed. That is not happening.

Operational secret I expect Gerry, seems to be the standard answer to have no other justification for any unaccountability by this government.
