Illegal fireworks

fireworks

For the third night in a row, some idiot neighbour (may not be the same one each night) is letting off fireworks.

This terrifies one of our dogs (who came to us from a shelter) and he's then restless all night, barking at the slightest noise, further annoying the closer neighbours.

Private use of fireworks is illegal here in Victoria. Where do these idiots get them?

They usually only last a couple of minutes or less, so it's impossible to work out precisely where they are. The police wouldn't seem to be likely to be interested. Any suggestions on what to do about them?

Just look at what Cranky is saying

hahaha Cranks :)

Found out he's a stripper Abby, got enough troubles without being labelled "dancing man" !!

We like a hot man ... makes your legs tremble

It is bad enough having the legal fireworks let alone some idiot letting of their own -- IMO a total waste of money and it scares the daylights out of all the Animals and wildlife -- typical selfish carry-on.   They go on and on about climate change and yet they do thigs like this -- and can't afford proper health treatment -- makes me mad as.

Sorry about your dogs Barak.

These type of ...... make me angry. We also have idiots in my area that let off illegal fireworks, but we also have a good Police Force in the area. Naturally if there is something major going on in the area, the report becomes less important. But when I've rang, they've met me outside my house within 5/10 minutes. I know from personnel experience what fireworks do to dogs, but I've also seen horses trying to escape through barb wire fences. Maybe we should start petitioning the law makers to class this as animal cruelty & toughen up the laws. We're lucky we can have our pets inside with us in these type of events, but what about the wildlife, they have nowhere to go.

Good luck with solving the problem Barak.

I reside in a rural setting on the edge of suburbia with a large club nearby. This club kindly writes to neighbors advising of planned fireworks so that animals can be controlled.

I would be very unhappy if illegal fireworks were let off ad hoc.

HERE in south melbourne,   we are walking distance to the city,   and there are fireworks going off all the time for god knows what,    i can stand in my garden and watch them,      they can be brought in from interstate,    anyone going over the border by car can buy them,    the dog i had before this one was terrified of them,    i knew an hour before a storm started that it was coming,    he was a RED KELPIE,   a very inteligent dog,    we had to have him inside by our side,   he would just shake,   but the little maltese i have now,   couldnt care less.  she will sit outside when they go off,    will sit out in the middle of a thunderstorm,  if i dont bring her in,    has no fear at all,   just the difference in their nature,   same as humans,  i suppose,    but do feel for yu BARAK,    just bring the dogs inside,   try and keep them quiet,    as for reporting them,    lets face it,   not enough police to stop the mayhem in the streets now,    so you may have more luck with your council,  but as they only work office hours,   dont think they would be much help,     if it were me,   id go into the street and try and see or hear where they came from,   then go report to the police,   but i doubt they would come to a call,

How much more do you know about "they can be brought in from interstate"?

Which state(s)?

There is no mayhem in my streets. I don't think that line was very helpful.

Barak -  I've been told it is quite easy to buy the fireworks from Canberra. I don't know which business, but a friend said, you have to go around the shop in the laneway and they bring them out to you. I'm told also some Chinese businesses sell them, they love fireworks.

Absolutely correct Hola...and not only in Canberra. Only this year a grocery store in  Footscray was caught selling fireworks illegally to the public. The owner was prosecuted along with 66 others during the course of the year.

Most of the offences seem to have occured in Melbourne...

Fireworks are sold legally in

Darwin, Katherine. Alice Springs and Tennant Creek.

Sandi, it's not quite what it seems. Fireworks can only be legally bought in the NT on Territory Day, and can only be used that night. If you look at the bottom of the page, you will see reference to Territory Day. A click on the "About Fusion" link at the top will make it clearer.

I was in Alice recently in the period leading up to that date, and saw lots of advertising like that website. It doesn't mean fireworks are freely available. (But there's obviously good profit in them.)

Apparently one can let off fireworks but you need a licence to do it.  I don't know where the idiots around me get them from but last New Year's Eve sounded like we were being invaded, the poor dogs were petrified.

Barak, it doesn't stop people buying them at that time and keeping them to use for whenever they want especially if they are tourists &/or have friends living there.

There's people in our area that have visitors from NT regularly.  The black market flourishes.

Hola to get a permit (at least here in SA) you need a special Licence to have fireworks and you have had to have done a special course and passed examinations for a Licence to get permission.

You need to front up with your Licence and you have to fill out a sheet of information where, what, when, how, why.

My son had his Licence  for the Hockey Club for a number of years and it has to be kept current every year for a fee.

www.fusionfireworks.com.au   is where I get my fireworks an I let ,em off all over me lb for the joy of Peeples who have dogs.

The  dogs never get much  fun till  I let off my crackers then they bark with joy.

:) You're a worry Monika. Very funny.

However, seriously, hope Barak and others find some solutions to the detonation of illegal fireworks in their area.

Be nice if Barak said thank you to members who posted an empathetic or realistically helpful post after his initial request re illegal private fireworks:

"Any suggestions on what to do about them?"

RnR I wish they could find some way of stopping them.  We quite frequently have someone letting them off about 11pm at night.  They just do a few and then do more on another night.

I don't have a dog anymore, but they used to terrify him.

Unless you can find out which house they are coming from you don't have much luck reporting.  Most councils are not open at 11 pm at night and I think our police forces are too thin on the ground to do anything.

MONICA,   your a classic,  lol,

Think this puts to rest that you can LEGALLY buy Fireworks in Canberra.

ACT bans fireworks

Updated 24 Aug 2009, 3:26pm

The Northern Territory is now the only Australian state or territory which still allows the sale of fireworks.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2009-08-24/act-bans-fireworks/1402218

I'm so over this illegal fireworks practice - am minding a relatives dog, staffy, who is a nervous wreck as evening approaches due to the random fireworks - doesn't matter if it's a fair distance away, the dog freaks out.

"Two people have been killed by illegal fireworks during New Year's Eve celebrations at Hollands Landing in Victoria and Budgewoi Beach in New South Wales."

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-01-01/new-years-eve-fireworks-kill-two-people-melbourne-and-nsw/8156172

I have absolutely no sympathy.

My dog (see the opening post of this thread) is limping this morning. He has injured his leg leaping around in abject fear during all the illegal fireworks in my neighbourhood last night. And there was a lot of them. Where and how do people get hold of them?

I would ban fireworks altogether.

Why would you not take your dog inside ???

The dog WAS inside.

All the illegal fireworks were in full swing near my place. I thought I was living in Bagdad. On the news yesterday the reporter was talking about the fireworks and opened up a couple of wheelie bins and all the used ones were there. It is a mystery, where did they come from?

BARAK,   sit somewhere where its quiet and have the dog with you,   keep your doors closed,   and shut the windows,   try to muffle any sound,     try and play a game with the dog when they are going off,    keep him occupied    and he may not even hear them,    they are a pain,  i know,    fortunatly my dog doesnt care,   but my last dog was terrirfied,   take it into the house WELL BEFORE they start,    and dont YOU get aggitated,   as the dog will pick up from you,

Are you completely off your brain tonight?

These are ILLEGAL fireworks. The morons using them don't letterbox the neighbourhood with their planned schedule of letting them off. So how can I do ANYTHING "well before they start"?

This dog, like most dogs, has great hearing. It can hear the fireworks from inside the house!

And I would like society to find another way of celebrating things. Fireworks are so passe. Stop giving dickheads the idea that fireworks are THE publicly endorsed way of celebrating anything.

Two idiots killed by illegal fireworks, natural selection at its best.  As far as taking your dog inside, I take it you have absolutley nothing to do with dogs to make a statement like that, your house would have to be R3 insulated with no gaps and every window would have to be double or triple glazed for this to work and even then I am not sure it would.

Here's an idea from left field, how about the idiots who are breaking the law, stop breaking the law, or if they find the lure of explosives so strong, let them be charged with possesion of illegal explosive devices and as such maybe subject to anti terrorism laws.  It would not be the first time the government stretched the use of these laws to get a result.

And if anyone is going to ask me if I think animals are more important than humans, my answer will be "it depends on the quality of the humans".

apologies barak,   i thought you were talking about the fireworks in the city,    i got mixed up with another post,        yes,   the illegal ones are more than a nuicese,     we spoke of them before,       unless your council can do something,   which is unlikely,      reporting to the police is your only option,   but i wouldnt expect much help from them either,

No fireworks near my place, I could only see the glitter in the sky over the water miles away..

The only sparkle I could see was from the bubbles in my glass and the "POP" of the cork.!

and my dog was fast asleep..

i have a birds eye view of the fireworks,  can stand in my garden and see the lot,
