Scamwatch warning: the Coles $500 gift card offer is a scam

coles gift card scam

Coles is cautioning customers about a new email scam that offers random recipients a free $500 gift card in exchange for a few personal details and liking its Facebook post.

The shopping chain is warning customers to ignore the fake message.

This new scam is another in a long line of email scams using major retailers’ brands to ‘phish’ for personal details.

Woolworths, JB Hi Fi and Bunnings are just some of the stores being used as a front for fake emails.

The Coles email reads: “Congratulations! Your email address was selected! Please make sure you claim your chance to receive this $500 Coles gift card”.

Once clicked, customers are led to a social media page, asked for personal details and then to share or like its Facebook post in exchange for a gift card. If customers click any of the links they’ll unsuspectingly download malicious software. Upon closer inspection, you’ll also note that the unsubscribe email address is based in New York.

Coles has released a warning statement about the scam, informing customers that “These offers predominantly attempt to collect your personal details or financial information. Coles will never request personal or banking details in unsolicited communications. Coles will never request personal or banking details in unsolicited communications”.

Cybersecurity experts are warning Australians not to be conned by increasingly sophisticated phishing scams such as this one from Coles and to report any such activity to Scamwatch.

Have you received the Coles gift card scam? Are there any other retailer scams you’d like to report to our members?

I did receive one of these emails and did not respond to it. I got caught once before - a few years ago. Thankfully that scam was only signing me up to a zillion other catelogue sites. However it took me ages to unsubscribe all of them. Best to ignore all of them - if it looks too good as the saying goes ........

Yes, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. I have got these scam emails from Coles, Woolies, Virgin - beware.

So are the emails for cards for Aldi, Bunnings, Myers, and J-B HiFi.

That's so true fast Eddie.. They are all scams, Coles, Woolies.. Myer espeically Bunnings  aren't that generous.

Add Apple to the list. Apparently my ipad and macbook are waiting for me!

Yes I get those every day ....all fake

I receive them all the time its takingme ages to remove them all, everyday they keep coming.

I think I did join one, and not they won't stoping coming in..

Just don't click on any links you don't know or who they are from.

My son is always drilling this into my head. I've not had any virsus for years cause I listen to my son.

I have had so many of these emails!  Every day they come in, and every day I delete them all.  Myers,  Coles, Bunnings, Woolworths and a number of smaller retailers.  I wish they would stop, because they clog up my inbox, both regular and junk mail.  I tried to Unsubsribe from a couple of the sites, and just found myself going around in circles getting nowhere.

Easier to just delete then open and unsubscribe. They will eventually get the message.

I make no accusations but immediately after I filled in my census form on line I began to get these type of emails. I had some very persistent mailers offering me jobs. I sent each to the 'block sender'page but it took ages before they stopped coming.

Add to this the chance to get free use of a Yoyota 4 wheel drive with the chance to keep it.

If the email is about a "Yoyota" 4WD it HAS to be a scam.

I have had these scams from everyone you can think of and have not responded to them including the ones from Microsoft that there is a problem with me computer and the one from the supposedly taxation office that I owe money that I haven,t paid in Tax last year and that there is a Warrant out for me !!

And thats a joke seeing as I haven,t worked and been retired now forover 15 yrs !! They are all scam,s and luckil I have a good junk box that pick,s these up and I just go in and delete them all !
But they still keep coming and I keep deleting !! Dotty

Clicking on 'Unsubscribe' on scam emails most likely means that you haven't unsubscribed, instead you have alerted the scammer to the fact that their software developing endless email names has found a real one ripe for selling on.
