emission trading

Well it looks like we going to pay the big polluters to pollute, great. What happened when the railways were closed?/ We were told that they were too expensive to continue at the rate the were,Did any of the towns recieve compensation?any of the older people who relied on the railways for transport compensated No. I know of a dozen towns that suffered and older folks had to move and in doing so they suffered alone and passed on having been separated from friends some life long. The smaller towns shut their doors the banks left and the oldies just died out.The friends used to help these old dears and always rallied around when they needed help, they felt safe.I say bugger the polluters you pay and get your act in line with the enviroment there is plenty of options out there. The chinese are working on electric cars (they have a whole section working on them) The chinese have invented a "safe nuclear reactor" that cannot melt down thay are still appraising it and could be available in 4 or 5 years. we have Thermal generators ready to come on line, wind farms, safer and less polluting gas turbines.Methane generators from waste tips etc. Instead of paying the polluters the 40 billion how about a fast train along the eastern corridor that link up some of the southern towns and big cities for those who do not like flying.Or reopen some of the branch lines and put converted buses on them they do it it in other countries.(Iam sure there would be volunteer drivers amongst us oldies who would be glad to run them a couple of times a day.)

Old Wombat: "Well it looks like we going to pay the big polluters to pollute"

Rudd is happy to part out with $7Billion of Australian taxpayers money per year.

On top of that , this country is looking at $315Billion in debt, to be paid off by who knows how many generations to come.

In the meantime, we have already started 2 years ago in Victoria at least, paying through the nose for electricity and gas ...this will continue, as many people tend to forget that while all the arjy barjy is going on in Canberra, the councils are quietly and regularly upping their rates and service costs, bit by bit, using the current madness of climate change as the excuse.

Then we have the State Governments, who are doing the same thing...that is quietly sending the citizens into deeper and deeper debt, hoping no-one will notice.

Oil will continue to fluctuate, with a steady rise over a period of time.

Edit to add: And an ETS on top of all that.

The greatest con job of all time!!

koko, where did you get that figure from ?

$315Billion was a figure which featured prominently in political news over an extended period of time....which is why I didn't bother posting links.

Point taken koko.

I guess what I was thinking of when the word debt was used was actually deficit.

Most families have a debt and also an income.

If the amount of the debt payable each year is higher than their income, then they have a deficit.

While the debt is over 300 billion, the deficit is about 57 billion and the budget figures show this should be paid by 2014/2015.

Whether that actually happens is anybody's guess.

But it is true that in times of recession, most countries have debt / deficit, and in time of economic growth they have a surplus.

What does the future hold ?

I don't think anyone can forecast that with certainty, but they have to go on trends to try a reasonable forecast.

Thanks Gerry.

I certainly don't profess to clearly understand all the figures and terms that get thrown about, but I really think there has been some mismanagement on the part of the Govt in handling the GFC.

Time will tell.
