Climate Change

I do beleive that human activity has and is affecting the climate. However I have to agree with the Federal Opposition from the point of view that it is better to wait until after the Copenhagen Conference before deciding on the best course of action. The Federal Government rush to have it passed by the end of the year was nothing more than political grandstanding so that Kevin Rudd/ Penny Wong could go to Copenhagen and tell the world how good they are (not) in getting the first scheme up.
As a young University student in the late 60's we were told of the natural cycles of cooling and warming of the planet and that we were and still are in a natural warming cycle. Evidence of that can be found in thge likes of Glacier Bay Alaska where the extent of the glaciers has been tracked since the mid 18th century and it has retreated a long way over 70 miles or so since that time in a steady progression.
That is not to say that human activity by way of the Industrial Revolution has not contributed to the an acceleration in the warming process. I would venture to say that human activity is a significant harmonic on the natural warming and cooling cycles the planet goes through.
In my lifetime I have noticed a significant change in the climate particularly since the acceleration in industrialisation in developing countries like India and China in the last 20 years. That is not to say that India and China are to blame, we are all to blame as we live more and more opulent lifestyles.
The highly developed countries laid the foundations for climate change in the last century with rampant industrial and economic growth based upon the use of fossil fuels for energy to support that growth.
We all have to take a step back in the industrialised world and take steps to mitigate our use of energy and processed resources.
However I am not sure that an Emissions Trading Scheme based upon taxation only is necessarily the best option.

I wonder why Clay is calling a new person a dope? for having his say?

...

New members to the forum most always tread warily at first so as to check the tenure of the topic...........this person has jumpted right in and has made some wild statements without any reference to their source ...........we have had debate about this before Phyl...........so he has had his say and I am having mine

...

Without proper reference I can only disregard what he has said and consider it to be wrong..........clay

So not only do you insult me Clay you are now telling me what I can say and what I can't?

Can you tell me just WHO made you the Seniors Site policeman and chief interrogator?

I made comment on the grass not growing because of the prolonged drought ,just where did I make a wrong statement about that? My source was looking out at the countryside and reading the papers would have thought that NO ONE would need proof that there was a prolonged drought over the whole country.

As far as trees giving off oxygen I thought that any fool with the smallest education standard knew that.

Going of topic ???? Well I was replying to something that Toot wrote So I guess you had better take Toot to task as well.

But Then the Topic is" climate change"Or maybe I am wrong there too?

????? ? SAVE

????? ?.THE

? (?) ?........TREES

???????.??????

As reported in the Daily Telegraph, farmers from across the country are driving to the lodge today to ask Kevin Rud to intervene in this sad protest as Peter Sinclair starts his 43rd day of his hunger strike. I would have thought the story was a very newsworthy one and can't understand why tv and radio reporters aren't jostling to talk to him, as would normally happen at another newsworthy event. What would it cost Kevin Rudd to spare him a few minutes of his time, he probably went to church yesterday, but has no compassion for a desperate, sick and confused man.

Hi Toot2000, I vaguelly remember Kevin Krudd getting very involved in protecting the welfare of a few passengers illegally ensconsced on an Australian Ship in Indonesia. Wouldn't you think he could spare a minute or 2 to speak to Peter Sinclair, if only to save an Australian life?

Innes, maybe he thinks that going to the protest site would be a sign of weakness when it fact it would have the opposite effect, I can't understand why his wife Therese hasn't nagged him into it by now.

Clearing can cause problems.

Australian scientists have claimed a world first by successfully restoring a coastal wetland devastated by acid run-off in Far North Queensland.

A combination of natural tidal action and treatment with lime has seen a dramatic improvement at the East Trinity site near Cairns, where mangrove and wetlands are returning along with fish and bird life.

Professor Ravi Naidu from CRC CARE says the acid crisis in the area started 40 years ago, when developers drained and cleared 800 hectares of tidal wetland to grow sugarcane.

He says there is an estimated 40 million hectares of similar coastal wetlands worldwide needing restoration.

In Australia there is about four million hectares needing treatment, including the lower Murray-Darling and along coastal parts of New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.ABC news story

How would you feel fwed if you were told that you couldn't work 22,000 of your own acres and were sent bankrupt? Then you were told there was no compensation. Not fair mate.

I must find out more about this case toot ............I read somewhere that he has been in Court more than 200 times and it seems unjust that he can not be paid for his land or to receive compensation ...........Did he break a fundamental law somewhere I wonder

...

He is certainly being given the raspberry..............there must be a reason ............clay

There has been footage of this on most tv and radio channels with very little response.

This makes me wonder why, the media usually have a go at government one way or another, but are leaving this low key.

There is a genuine argument that too much land clearing has been done by both farmers and developers, this has been a generational thing and it appears Peter is in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I certainly do sympathise with him, but trying to bully the P.M. of the day could set a bad precedent.

Just been watching interview with Peter Spencer.

He really is a man at the end of his tether, and he is very lucid and sensible.

Was it my imagination that the interviewer would not really focus on the things he was saying.

It is a worry.

Hi Lolih, I missed the interview. I just wish it was over.

Hi Toot2000, you will find it on MSN Today show, it was channel 9 Today

Meanwhile, flooding continues in Australia.

Interesting read when its now 30 months to get their act together and do something about climate change/global warming. Its damn global warming, stop watering it down to climate change. We as the human race caused  it by opulent living, wanting everything digitized, more mines when a coal fired power station in NSW is closing sooner than expected ( Eraring at Lake Macquarie ) by Origin, and also the Liddell Power Station in NSW by AGL. Why close some and reinvent others? I know Liddell was getting old, but not so with Eraring.

Thanks for the list RnR, have a friend overseas who wants to know the world trend but can't locate the list.
