Government not always at fault

I have just received some info from National Seniors, that the reason the cataract surgery Medicare Benefits have been cut, was because the ophthalmologists, had withdrawn from negotiations discussing the fees for surgery. The surgeons have insisted on a new fee for basic cataract surgery of $1160!!!
Not bad for a procedure that takes well under an hour of their precious time.
Their Association has set the fee following internal meetings. I thought this came under the heading of collusion under the Trade Practices Act!!!!!
Where is the terribly expensive ACCC?

How much was their fee b4 ?

Is that $1160 just for the doctor, or for the complete procedure?

I went with my wife, here in the US, and it took time prior to the lens operation in a preparation area. She had to be registered, tagged, changed to hospital gown. A nurse brought in her lens, a registered and serialized item with the manufacturers name etc. The nurse read the hospital orders to my wife. Right eye or left? Doctors name? Wifes name, address, phone number, etc. All this to avoid making a mistake. Next she was moved to the operating room, but I could not go.

When it was all done and the staff felt there was no problem she was brought back to the preparation area. After a short period of waiting she was allowed to get dressed. Then a checkout with the same nurse that checked her in. Some advice for my wife, some solution to rinse her eyes, a follow up appointment with the surgeon.

For my wife it was more that 1 hour. From arrival to leaving it was more like 2 to 3 hours.

So if it was for the doctor it seems a bit high. If for the entire procedure it doesn't seem to high.

Several people involved, beds need recovered after my wife leaves, I don't know how many folks were involved in the operating room. I am sure there were some skilled help in there just in case of some emergency happening.

.

Hi bobagain, I am far from being an expert, but I understand that the $1160 is the surgeon's stand alone fee. The only thing that you can expect, following the operation, is an invitation from the Hospital Staff to phone the doctors surgery to make an appointment (at a cost of anything from $100 to $200 ) to see how the operation went.
