A recent news item on the rise of anti-Christianity in the USA
"Could you imagine going to jail for your faith? A recent report warns that it could happen.
CBN News investigated the growing wave of hostility to Christianity in America that's led to hundreds of court cases.
Angela Hildenbrand faced the very real possibility of going to jail for her faith. The trouble began when a federal judge ruled that no one at her Texas high school could pray or even use words like "prayer" or "amen" during the 2011 graduation ceremonies. As class valedictorian, Hildenbrand felt God deserved the praise, even if it meant jail for her.
"I was definitely preparing myself to have to make that sort of tough decision and mentally prepare myself for what well could be coming next," she told CBN News.
Hildenbrand's case is just one of more than 640 cases of religious hostility cited in a new report by the Liberty Institute. General Counsel Jeff Mateer, who takes on many of these cases, helped put the survey together.
"The atheists and the secularists are well-organized and they're well-funded," the Liberty Institute attorney told CBN News. "The rate of hostility to people of faith is overwhelming," he said. "It's increasing. Every day, we're getting calls."
One call involved the Veterans Administration demanding to preview Scott Rainey's prayer for a Memorial Day ceremony at Houston National Cemetery. They told Rainey, who pastors the Living Word Church of the Nazarene in Houston, he couldn't pray "in Jesus' name." "I have never said a prayer in my life where I didn't end it saying 'in the name of Jesus Christ I pray, amen,'" Pastor Rainey said.
Contending for the Faith
Mateer is also working to save this veteran's memorial cross in San Diego, one of several cases that could have serious national consequences if courts order their removal. "Are we going to bulldoze all those crosses?" Mateer asked. "We're going to sandblast God from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier?" But Mateer says the good news is, when believers fight back, they usually win. "You need to stand up and fight," he said. "And that's exactly what Angela did."
Just one day before Hildenbrand's graduation, an appeals court ruled she could pray and say whatever she wanted. "I thank You for Your great love for us and for our great nation, where we are free," she prayed at her graduation. "And it's in Jesus' name I pray, amen."
Courts eventually ruled that Pastor Rainey -- and all veterans at burials -- are allowed to freely express their faith.
But there is an across-the-board assault of religious hostility, and Americans' religious liberty hangs in the balance."
Is Australia heading in the same direction with the imposition of secularism/athesim and its restrictions on freedom of Christians to express their faith publicly? Will that make Australia a sitting duck for Islamization? Here is a topic where everyone and anyone can speak their mind. Let us keep it mature and civil please. :0)
aquatrek you would be the most ignorant twit that has ever drained water out of his brain, you are one of the most stupid persons that had to indulge in crude remarks to justify the drivel you were posting. The worst aspect is that you engulf yourself in nilism and swallow it as if it was nectar. One day you may see the light, hopefully before the train hits you. I find it hard to believe someone as dense as you would want an apology from someone stating their beliefs, if any apologies are deserved it is from such as you.
You cant spell it nor understand it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nihilism
I repeat - stating ones beliefs when they are not asked for nor needed in a societal blog world is just plain outright arrogant rudeness. You fall into that category yourself as you are apparently an alien who has mental capacities that bear the hallmarks of delusional insanity. Wyatt, Waco, Jonestown, scientology, creationists etc. History repeats itself over and over again with this human mental sickness. One day there will be screening and treatment but until then the public will just have to grin and put up with it - or disclose it for what it is.;-)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
It is amazing MEK how you can rip into me & refer to me as an athiest who has never read the Bible & is religiously blind, simply because I referred to Ron Wyatt as a lying cult type false gospeller & backed the opinion with logical & reasonable argument. You are so stupid that you do not even realise that there are 2 Bibles, The Old Testament, which is basically the Jewish Bible & the New Testament which was originally the Bible of Christianity, which by the way, has been interpreted & re-written so many times that it has little relationship to the original Hebrew & Greek works. The 2 have very little to do with each other. Mathew, Mark, Luke & John could not even agree on what they are supposed to have personally seen. Just read their Gospels & tell me what actually happened to Judas & how he died. I am basically a believer of Christian Principles. I object strongly to the tax free, money making practices of modern & anscient organised religion. You are obviously a member of the "Born Agains" who quote the Bible whenever it suits. They are a money making creation that is a derivitive of modern Christianity & are well represented by groups like Hillsong, that are making the Catholic & the Anglican Churches look like poorly run amateurs in the religios business world.
Innes I realise you have referred your input to Mek but if I may answer with my view.
When you make out a testament {Will} then later add {rider} or write out a new one. It becomes a new Will or a new Testament. Both have been written or copied numerous times, some words may change, but the meaning has remained. As you would know the Jewish scribes were bound when a mistake, blot etc was made to roll up the scroll and restart,The scroll was never destroyed even though blemished.
Mathew Mark Luke and John, as witnesses to to the events of the times, like witnesses of today where there is more than one will give different eyewitness accounts of the same event, which doesn't eliminate that the event occured.
Judas to my knowledge, after regretting what he had done, hung himself. Jesus as you know took the place on the cross in place of Jesus Barrabas the criminal.
Some are believers in biblical spirituality. They affirm the Bible as the one true guide for daily living and are offended by non-biblical beliefs and values.
Elsewhere across the spectrum of spiritual people are those who see the Bible as containing sage and pithy statements to moralise upon to draw ethics and values for daily life.
The spectrum is broad. So must be the tolerance of believers. If it is taken far enough it is possible to see the light of the equally good people coming from other directions. From philosophy for instance. All are trying to make sense of our short, fragile existence, including athiests. As the songs says, "Where do you go to when you are alone in your head?"
It all works OK, until some get it into their head that the beliefs, behaviours and speech of others ought be controlled. That can easily extend to thought police. Political correctness. It is not only religions that seek to control people and limit what they say, or even think.
There is intolerance anywhere across the spectrum of human communication and behaviour. Almost always from authoritarians, and sometimes from narcissistic serial nuisances too. Ban this, ban that. Censor this, censor that! We always know what is best for you etc.
ATM the media and social sites are filled with extreme attitudes. Probably it is only the few very noisy suspects from way-out Left and equally way-out Right. The clamour of the easily recruited mobs on the Net is not always a reliable indicator of the issues, or overall health of society.
Maybe some sunlight and voluntary work can help. A few cold drinks and a barbie later.
I was not going to comment any further but Innes has accused me of "ripping into him." Perhaps he could show me where I did that? I am not in the habit of "ripping" into anything. I merely speak the Truth. What you believe is your problem. I know differently, I do not think differently, no human has taught me to "think differently.”
I am not Roman Catholic I am not Protestant – I need no other label or identity but Christian a follower of Jesus, the Risen Christ.
Your posts in answer to mine have been unnecessarily harsh and rude. I have taken that and chosen not to be offended. It is not me who offends you it is your own conscience, it knows the Truth when it hears it. Most people fighting God, as I have honestly and openly in this blog stated for all to read – I was one of those people. No one wanted to believe He wasn't there more than me. I was rude as you are to Christians so I do not judge you. I understand you, but you do not understand me. Your choice. You might be pleasantly surprised if you stopped putting up the “wall of harsh words” to protect yourself (against what – the Truth??).
I realise you have an understanding, from a carnal point of view (that is a fact, not an insult), of the Bible from your perspective of Roman Catholocism. You have not mentioned any other denominations that you have been in so I presume from your comments you judge them from afar, not bothering to investigate further. Your choice, you are perfectly entitled to do so, but do not expect me to take you seriously.
On the Bible you make some amazing claims about what I do know and what I don't for someone who has never met me or known me. From whence does all this “knowledge” of me come I think I am entitled to ask????
If you understood the true history, not the denominationally slanted one, of Judaism, the roots of Christianity and the ongoing Covenant God has made with man, first with the Jews and when many of them rejected Jesus, with the Gentiles, you would not be making so many mistakes.
Constantine did indeed set up the Christian Church (by the way Jewish believers call themselves Messianic Jews, not Christian, the latter refers to Gentile believers. In doing so and the later banishing of Jews from Rome meant the Church in Rome lost the rich Hebrew roots of Christianity. When you understand the roots you understand the Bible is one Book, in two parts. Peter was never the first Pope. His ministry was to the Jews. He went to Rome only once it is believed. His bones are not buried under the Vatican as claimed, that tomb is empty, his bones have been found recently in Jerusalem along with those of many of Jesus followers.
Isiaih one of the prophets of God told of Jesus virgin birth, his ministry and the manner of his reception by the Jewish people, mainly the “religious leaders” of the day, and the manner of His death. This over 700 years before Jesus was born.
The prophet Micah, also 700 + years BC tells that He will be born in Bethlehem. All this hundreds of years before His birth. The Bible prophecies have come true, five hundred of them have already and we are seeing them unfold even today.
Psalm 22 written by David, inspired however, by God, speaks of Jesus' torment on the Cross, His agony, the words He spoke from the Cross. King David lived round 1037BC.
So you see the Old and New Testament are a complete Book not two separate ones. The Old Testament was always pointing to Jesus coming, but the religious leaders of the day missed, puff up as they were with pride and power. “White washed tombs full of dead man's bones”, Jesus called them.
Now on all the different translations, I have many, including the RC version and the Jewish one. I have many translations. I have read the Bible from cover to cover many times and still study it.
In addition I have been to Israel and looked upon the Dead Sea Scrolls and seen the places where they were copied down. Amazing, so neat. All the books of the OT except Esther and Nehemiah. They were obviously lost.
Now Innes, if you wish to have a discussion on the Bible, open another blog. This one was not intentioned to be a blog for trashing the Bible or Christians, but it has been turned into that by some very angry people.
It only serves to confirm what was the question at the beginning of this blog, are we in danger of losing our freedom to worship and express our belief in Jesus openly.
The danger lies within Australia, not just Islam. Thank you again and if you come back at me I will no longer reply on this site. Anytime you wish to have a civil and genuine discussion about Christianity I am willing to discuss it with you.
Nautilus I trust this will give you a better understanding of where I am coming from.
Thank you Seth for your post too in support of what we both know to be Truth.
Thank you seth. The point I was making was that the Gospels are not necessarily fact. Mathew reported that Judas hung himself. Mathew was born in Syria many years after the event & it has been noted by many theologians that most of Mathews work was actually a Greek re write of Mark's writings. It is most interesting that a different Apostolic eye witness report says quite clearly that Judas fell on the ground of Hakeldama, (later named accordingly, The Field of Blood) where his insides burst over the field. How many of the fanatical Bible quoters are aware that the Gospel of John Mark was actually penned by John Mark, who was NOT an Apostle at all & is generall beleived to have been scibed from the actual words of Saint Peter (Simon). The Catholic Church has been teaching the Bible to the children of the Church, for hundreds of years that St Peter was the first Pope. Definitely not true. The Greek & Egyption Orthodox Churces were formed after the Crucifiction & the Catholic Church was actually formed as the Roman Chuch by Constantine in the 300s AD, long after most of the Apostles had each been crucified.
Innes I understand your point but also cannot say if they are. to my understanding Matthew was a tax collector who became a disciple then an apostle, John Mark who was known as either John or Mark was a scribe, You are right about St. Peter not being the first Pope, peter was the Apostle to the Jewish, whereas Paul {Saul} was the Apostle to the gentiles, The claim that Peter is the rock on which the church is built is also a misinterpretation of what was really said. It is not built on a man but a 'Revelation" Mark did accompany Paul but was a disapointment, he also went with Barnabas. luke I believe was a doctor.
As humans prospered post the last glacial maximum around 15-20,000 years ago the ensuing regions, including Africa and many other places where Animism is still in vogue, generated a) the Mediterranean with its Greek and Roman influences b) the Middle East with its Abrahimic and Islamic influences c) the Indian continent with its ancient Hindu and Buddha influences plus the Asian Confusianism and Shinto to attempt to name most; all producing philosophies/religions/faiths for all of humankind to digest and utilize.
That one is any more true/real/enigmatic/the best than the others is delusional. They each served a need and a purpose at the times in which they became dominant in respective regional thought.
Now it is a globalized world more and more everyday - common sense would indicate a melding of all that is best instead of division being the driving force. One can only hope for the future in this aspect of humankind's continuing existance prospects.
