Did you watch the Senior Gent.on how the Age Pension is too much?

on tele. last night? carrying on about how Seniors have it too good re the pension?

It is stupid,  as the pension is below the poverty line and  it must be desperately difficult for those not owning a home or renting in the private sector but  many many Seniors are struggling at the moment because of the cut in interest rates for those living off the interest from their money and no better off than those on  the pension. I am glad for our kids struggling to own a home though, so no easy solution is there. Just think he would have been far better having a bit of commonsense and not giving fuel to some  to once again criticize older folk.

We were off shopping before 9 this morning so did get a parking spot near the entrance to the shops as knew it was going to be a hot one today but jimminies the spots were filling up fast. Love Christmas though and people seem just that little bit nicer at this time of year :) Lot of bargains around :)) :)  and yes also at Aldi :)

No I did not see the show Phyl, which channel was it on ?

Those pensioners who live in government houses when compared to someone who owns their house has to pay fro rates, insurance, repairs and maintanence they are actually better off.

Private renting is a bit harder but then some get rental subsidy.

But ifeel that the pensioners are doing it tough.

Ok! You going to tell us what the best buy is at Aldi's this week?

It was on "Today Tonight". I agree Private Renting has to be very difficult as some people pay $400 a week for an ordinary home and I think they receive something like $100 to help but do not quote me on this as I really do not know what the payment is.

I think we could all do with a bit more whichever way we are travelling and certainly do not need the bloke spruiking on how great the age pension is. The best thing since sliced bread for us is owning our home and not owing anybody a cent. We buy what we can pay cash for or we would not buy it end of story  for us,  but hey not crowing as every circumstance is different and if a person really needs something maybe has to go into debt.

Heaps of goodies Abby. I have to admit I think they could stock more grocery items as lot of things I wish they had (which they used to) but one week there while the next gone forever.  Frozen chopped onion and gravy mix in the big packet just two :)

He might be one of those pensioners they talk about with the $50 notes under his mattress

The disappearing grocery line really gets to me - Ugh!!

Hey there, I hace been off the ether for a month or two,but glad I still recognise some folkHi Phyl,Hi Seth and whoever I haven't caught up with yet .I did not see the show either ,but having been forced to move house ,because my landlord needed the house ,I am now in half the space at almost double the rent and it isn't bloody easy ,I no longer go shopping for what I need ,but for what I can't do without , the basics no more, no less The rent assistance is still the same for what I am paying now, even though the rent is much more and in the process you part with a large part of your life because you have nowhere to keep your treasures  anymore   Not complaining , just stating facts.

Tadpole that must be hard, problem is too there is a view that as you get older you need less in life including space! oSure chances are you have some things that are necessary e.g. Washing machine or a car but they do need replacing and cost a fair bit to do so. I sympathies at you having to move rather than choose to, huge difference.

Hugs Taddy. How good is it to see you. SO missed you.

That is a bummer having to leave your home you were comfortable and happy in.

Private rental is really beyond the finances of Seniors really and I so feel for you and all those other people renting (our daughter living in the Sunshine Coast is renting with school kids so they also know how hard it is as over $400 from a wage is very difficult.

So many home with cheaper rent and very nice looking homes to boot in the public sectorabsolutely vandalised and allowed to go to rack and ruin whereas many people would love to get into a nice home on reasonable rent.

Please do not leave us again as you and Deanna

 have been sorely missed.

Thanks Phyl I hope you and yours are well and still shopping        still got your gold bra's???

Yep it must be hard for some...When I retired I got rid of the car....Unless you are getting a good pension or service equity it is silly to try and run a car...Fortunately I live near Hospital, shopping centre and everything that you need for a good lilfe...I havent a big income but what I get I manage on....I`ve had years of practicing to live frugally and its paid off..making a dollar go as far as 4 or five dollars and thats the secret...Its very difficult when all the bills come in but I still presevere alone and do it...

Women alone always had a hard time of it after divorce or widow......well known fact.. e pals men all seem to find extra work when retired.....I get a small stipend fr overseas which used to pay all my bills but over the years its halved and I have to be careful which bill gets preference..lolololol I don`t do badly and go without anything ....I`ve to lose a few kilos at the moment and so my shopping sprees are out the door and in with the veggies, and fruit , no more cakes, bikkies and CHEESE.......lolol what do others think...Maybe the fellow who says the pension is too much maybe thinking that if a person receives other pensions well then it is wasteful to receive it...I say there are no really poor people in Australia only of their own making......

Precious

RE: "..I say there are no really poor people in Australia only of their own making......"

Whilst your obesity may be of your own doing some people have diseases that are NOT as an example the mentaly ill. On any given night over 100,000 are homeless. They do not have a car to get rid off.

Well said Abby, some don't even have a car to sleep in and if they have no permanent address how do they receive any pension or benefits? How do they pay for medications that they need. Thank goodness for soup kitchens for them. Teenagers thrown out of home end up on the streets and are at risk they only have their bodies to sell. Non of us should be complacent or smug, retires who had provided well for themselves who lost all their savings in the GFC and scams they did not bring it on themselves.!

Sure is tough for some I have to agree... we are both on a pension.. own our own home but pay rent for the land its on ,ie a relocatable home , we choosed to live like this as earlier on my hubby was married and he lost his 5 acres and a home on it ended up still owing money on it when his wife divorced him .. the home was sold and she got the proceedings of the sale as hubby had to pay the home off and his share of providing a home for his 2 children.. so he was out of pocket and also paying off a home which took him another 10 yrs then to pay it off.. we got married and started off fresh again but with 4 children then 2 of his and mine as his wife decided she didn`t want them so hubby got custody of the boys.. and my two were from me being left a widow with 2 young ones under 3 .we rented for years then managed to buy a small home which was good then we decided to sell that and buy this relocatable and have a little over for extras . so life is hard but we manage and still pay our way.. rent for the site our home is on and medical benefits as hubby hasn`t been well and thats the only way we can manage.we both get a pension and have to make it do, like others say no luxuries and just buy what you need  if its within your means.. is my motto.. . so yes I don`t know what this fellow was talking about either I never saw that but will go back on the archives of it so see what he was talking about.. Lots have it hard .. pensioners and also homeless as well .. we just all have to bob in and help if we can . and when we can .
