Albany, Western Australia.

I am writing this for anyone thiking of touring WA.

Any one coming to Western Australia would be missing a lot of our history if they missed this City of 33000 nestled in between 2 hills it is our 6th largest town in Western Australia but also our oldest being founded in 1827 as a military outpost to NSW. Originally it was the capital of WA purely because of its' very deep, safe Harbour which today means it is a Port of call for the huge tourist liners that come in.

A large ex  whaling station kept now as a museum was still functioning in the 1970s  but fortunately was closed down.

Apart from pushing for Federation in 1901, being a Nursery for whales tracking south during the whaling season the main thing, for me, is that it was the last port of call for the Anzac troopships on the way to Europe the last sight so many of the young men ever had of their homeland. 2014 is going to have a re-enactment of the fleet leaving on Anzac Day and as always I have my bed booked here for Anzac Day!

It is not only the Europeans who have had it as a special place there are ancient Aboriginal fish and oyster trapping beds etc, at least 6000 years old you just need to know where they are.

A great place not to be missed on a WA tour and best of all in our hot summers it is cool.

Vivity, Do you mind if I copy and paste this to put in another forum on which I've started an Australia thread? folks from USA, Canada and UK often ask questions and say they'd like to visit and ask for places  of interest,  I'd use your name as the source of course :)

Of course Maggs, we are so lucky with our beautiful country I would love to share it with others.

Thanks vivity, this country is a truly amazing place.

What a pleasant surprise, a post giving thanks for our wonderful country.

It is nice to see the glass is not half empty, but in fact it is overflowing.

thx

I will never forget Albany. My late husband and myself were there in 2010 ,curtusy of our daughter.a special treat as it was my Husbands Birthday while we were there. (little did we know that it was to be his last a few months later) My Daughter had organised for us to go Whale watching.A first for us and it was a wonderful experience. We did some sightseeing around Albany and loved it!  My Husband and I planned to return on our own one day.Sadly it was not meant to be! So while I have lovely memories of our trip to WA it is also bittersweet. I am so glad we got to see the Whales when we did ,but at the moment the photographs usually bring tears to my eyes when I look at them. The memories are still fresh in my mind. It was a very happy time!

WA is a wonderful place and I for one would love to go again.  that was our second trip there. We were very lucky as my Daughter was living and working in Perth.

We do live in a beautiful country.I am an expat Brit and have been here for over 40yrs and consider myself lucky to live here!

Jo so sorry to hear you lost your husband not so long ago, when next I am in Albany I will think of you now. We all have places we love in our own State. I have been thinking of starting a blog on here asking for people to tell us their favorite places in their own State so we all know good places to visit. Would you like to start that blog? Seeing as I have already put up this one of mine,  yours would be very interesting from a different State.

Viv

Looks as if you are living in your own bit of heaven there

Thanks for sharing
