souerkraut

G'day

just made my first batch of souerkraut and its fantastic .

so easy to make but the wait is the thing - we needed to wait 4 weeks so now we have it and some German styled sausages.

am told the sausages should be simmered then grilled

the souerkraut is simmered with appl onion garlic parsley bay leaf and juniper berries.

will give it a go - sounds beaut

Seems Europeans have many secrets to be discovered

have now discovere that other nations do not slice the cabbage at all until it is pickled but i suppose it will taste similar

love to hear from you

I'm glad I'm not in the same room! LOL

You either like it or loathe it same as with tripe, German Sausages are good tho!

Dear Maggs and Vivity

have you tried souerkraut and was it bad ?

we bought a can and cooked it as stated on the label and it was quite bland but certainly not bad.

read how to make it so as you know we made some and it is really nice.

our grand kids said that they hated souerkraut but they had never even tasted it - they have now and like it as well.

My wife hated prawns - until she had one - she is not mad on them but enjoys one or two.

no i ask i find that many people make their own souerkraut but keep quiet about it because nobody likes it - how odd

Peter, First time I had some was on holiday in Germany and out with some Germans who told me it was delicious, had it served with Bratwurst and Mayonaise. Mayonaise and Batwurst were lovely, Saurekraut was horrible. Next I tried it in Alsace cooked by cousins yuk, just not my taste buds but normally, except for tripe or mangoes, I will eat anything.

Tho' come to think of it I won't eat fish eyes either. My daughter and her father used to fight over who got the fish eyes if I bought a big fish head for bouillabaisse, that is pretty disgusting thought  too.

Well everything you mention i just love

Seggie. Cabbage, well, a German friend gave me some years ago and I can still remember the effect. Tasted reasonable but, no, won't go into any more details, but Peter, Weisswurst sausages are the very best with mustard in a bread roll. The Weisswurst are hard to find but some big markets do sell them. They freeze well too.

Where do all these wonderful recipes come from?

Oh saurkraut and kransky sausages - fantastic.

Don't be SO coy Seth. I am sure you have heaps of great recipes and can put them all together drop of a hat.

Souerkraut seems very strange stuff but probably very good for some :) lol

I am sure you make a delicious one Peter :)

Phyl souerkraut is said to be very good for your health - have no idea but it is vey old and even used by the Vikings in their long sea voyages.

it changes the chemestry of cabbage and is just so simple to do its a bit of fun as well.

How are you Phyl - give kraut a search n the net -

just cooked some with onions apple bay leaf garlic and juniper berries- certainly tastes good to me - have boiled the sausage and will grill them for tea tonight with the cooked sauerkraut -
