Bali, which town is nice to stay for a senior?

I'm looking for a midwinter break for7 nights.  Bali is looking good, but I've never been to Bali before, and I don't know which town/area to start looking for accomodation.

I'm male, 67, solo.  I used to be a backpacker, now I'm a suitcase toter.   I'd like to experience the local culture,  and I'm not into beaches, etc..   I do, however, really like markets, and food stalls. and nightlife and stuff.

I am particurlary interested in music, so I really have to see an authentic Gamelan orchestra.

Tell me, where should I go in Bali?   Which area?

Phil.

Only drink bottled water otherwise you might wind up with Bali belly

Or worse.

Best place to winter is up north west on the WA Coast.

Of course it is...But  I can get 7 nights in Bali including airfares cheaper than 3 nights in the NW of WA excluding travel.............. You work it out.

Yes Bali is ok for all ages.

Seniors will not be comfortable in Kuta where the younger generation go for the party atmosphere.

Go to Nusa Dua or Ubud. Look at www.asiarooms.com for the best deal.

We usually go to Ubud for 3 days and then to Nusa Dua for 8 days. You will love the place.

Advice from a senior.

Hi,  I used to go to Bali quite a lot.  I think that the Australian druggos have ruined the place.  I would not bother to go back there now days.  It is a beautiful place & the Balinese, rather than the Indonesian people are lovely.  In basic principal, the best area to stay is around Kuta, especially for the night life, but, be warned, don't wander around the darker streets at night on your own.  For your expressed interests, you would probably like the area of Seminyak.  It is a little more expensive & just a little out of Legian but has great restaurants & shopping.  A couple of tips.  If a customs officer asks for a bribe, pay it.  Do not, under any circumstances drink any water that did not come out of a bottle, even for cleaning your teeth.  Unless you are in a major resort, never have a drink with ice in it.  Bali Belly will make you wish you were dead.  If you want to be a little more adventurous, I would suggest that you book at a resort for 1 night only & on the following day go looking in the edge of the resort areas for a family owned & serviced hut.  You wont have air con, but they are extremely cheap & you will be looked after like royalty.  Good Luck.

Innes, Thanks for your response.    Two questions back...

1, Kuta is OK????   I have been led to believe that it is full of Ausie drunken teenagers,

2.  Re. customs officers soliciting bribes.    Your advice is to pay?

Please explain.   This goes against everything that I have encountered before.

Hi Phil,   Kuta is where all the activity is, but if you avoid the bars you will be reasonably free of the drunken druggos.   As for the customs officers, just remember that everything to do with the Indonesian authorities is run by bribes & corruption.  The Balinese people are not Indonesian & are not Muslim.   Some other tips.  Make sure you visit the gold & silver smiths at Celuk.  It is only about 8 to 10 K's from Dempasar.  You will want to buy some wood carvings.  They are really special.  Have a good look around the markets & you will notice that there are about 100 or more standard carvings like elephants etc.  These are made for the tourists.  Ignore them.  Look for the non factory outlets in Mas.  You should look for the works from the one off artisan.  If you look closely, you will notice that the carving follows the grain of the original gnarled driftwood & every piece is unique.   They cost twice as much, but they are collectable works of art.

I would suggest UBUD as there are markets, culture, the mountains and beautiful scenery.

Accomodation is cheap and you can stay in a tourist hotel, cottages or homestays.

Do your research!! I suggest try a few websites and look at trip advisor also.

Thanks Krissy.  I am doing my research,  bigtime.   That's why I posted here, and your input is most welcome.

So......... Tell me.........where is a good place to stay in Ubud?

I am very intersted in Gamelan.

Phil.
